NHTSA campaign 07V337000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Starcraft RV, Inc.: Structure › Frame and Members › Underbody Shields

Starcraft RV, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 3, 2007 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 70. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN CAMPING TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH DEXTER CHASSIS FRAMES, THE FRAMES WERE "NOTCHED" TO ACCOMMODATE THE FITTING OF THE COUPLER. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE FRAMES COULD BE WEAKENED IN THIS AREA.

The risk

A CRACKED FRAME CAN CAUSE THE FRAME TO BOW DOWNWARD INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

STARCRAFT IS WORKING WITH DEXTER CHASSIS TO REPAIR THESE FRAMES. DEXTER WILL WELD ADD A STEEL REINFORCEMENT UNDERNEATH THE COUPLER AND OVER THE NOTCHED AREA OF FRAME, THUS MAKING THIS AREA STRONGER. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 8, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DEXTER AT 1-800-669-7681 OR STARCRAFT AT 260-593-2550.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 07V337000.
