NHTSA campaign 07V300000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Spartan Chassis, Inc.: Steering

Spartan Chassis, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 13, 2007 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 89. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES AND FIRE TRUCKS, THE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY CONTAINS A SPACER WITH INCORRECT DIMENSIONS. A SPACER OF INSUFFICIENT HEIGHT ALLOWS FOR EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE RETURN FUNCTION OF THE RECIRCULATION BALLS AND, AS A CONSEQUENCE, THERE IS A FAILURE IN THE CIRCULATORY FUNCTION OF THESE BALLS.

The risk

IF THE FAILURE MODE IS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE, THE FINAL RESULT WILL BE INTERRUPTION IN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE WHEELS OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE CAN NO LONGER BE STEERED AND COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 23, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SPARTAN AT 517-543-6400.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 07V300000.
