NHTSA campaign 07V033000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Paccar Incorporated: Trailer Hitches › Fifth Wheel Assembly

Paccar Incorporated reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 6, 2007 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 164. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, THE FIFTH WHEEL KING PIN RELEASE AIR VALVE INTERNAL SPOOL WAS INSTALLED BACKWARDS. THE AIR OPTION OF THE KING PIN RELEASE SYSTEM WOULD BE INOPERABLE. TO CORRECT THIS SITUATION IN PRODUCTION, THE VEHICLE'S AIR LINES WERE MISTAKENLY REVERSED RATHER THAN REPLACING THE VALVE.

The risk

THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE KING PIN CAN RELEASE WITHOUT THE DRIVER'S KNOWLEDGE. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE DRIVER COULD DRIVE AWAY AND THE TRAILER COULD BECOME DISENGAGED.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE KING PIN RELEASE SYSTEM AND SUSPECT VALVE. IF ANY VEHICLES HAVE A NON-CONFORMING VALVE OR INCORRECT PLUMBING, IT WILL BE REPLACED AND RE-PLUMBED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 28, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PETERBILT AT 940-591-4196.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 07V033000.
