NHTSA campaign 06V486000 · Part 573 safety recall report

BMW of North America, LLC: Tires › Valve

BMW of North America, LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 21, 2006 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 144. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE TIRE INFLATION VALVE HOLE IN THE RIM OF THE CROSS-SPOKE WHEEL WHICH IS EQUIPPED WITH THE OPTIONAL TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPM) WAS INCORRECTLY MANUFACTURED. A LEAK MAY DEVELOP AT THIS LOCATION POSSIBLY CAUSING SUDDEN DEFLATION OF THE TIRE.

The risk

IF THIS HAPPENED, MOTORCYCLE HANDLING AND CONTROL WOULD BE COMPROMISED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL TEMPORARILY DEACTIVATE THE TPM SYSTEM, REMOVE THE CORRESPONDING VALVES AND INTEGRAL TPM SENSORS, AND THEN REPLACE THEM WITH STANDARD VALVES. WHEN A PERMANENT REPAIR IS AVAILABLE, OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED TO BRING THEIR VEHICLES IN FOR REACTIVATION OF THE TPM SYSTEM AND REPLACEMENT OF THE INTEGRAL TPM SENSORS AND VALVES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 12, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-331-1117.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 06V486000.
