NHTSA campaign 06V462000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Nissan Diesel America, Inc: Power Train › Automatic Transmission › Gear Position Indication (prndl)

Nissan Diesel America, Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 4, 2006 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 133. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH THE ALLISON SERIES 2500 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DO NOT HAVE A PARK POSITION AVAILABLE INSIDE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER CONTROL ASSEMBLY INDICATING A PARK POSITION IS AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION BY THE VEHICLE OPERATOR.

The risk

THIS MAY MISLEAD THE VEHICLE OPERATOR INTO PLACING THE SHIFT LEVER INTO THE INDICATED PARK POSITION AND EXITING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT APPLYING THE PARKING BRAKE. THIS COULD CAUSE UNEXPECTED OR UNCONTROLLED MOVEMENT OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING WHICH MAY RESULT IN VEHICLE CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE FREE OF CHARGE THE SHIFT ASSEMBLY IF IT INDICATES THE INCORRECT PARK POSITION. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN DIESEL AT 972-756-5500.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 06V462000.
