NHTSA campaign 06V426000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Monaco Coach Corporation: Steering

Monaco Coach Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 8, 2006 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 47. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES, AN IMPROPER NUT AND BOLT COMBINATION WAS USED TO CLAMP THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ONTO THE STEERING SHAFT. WITHOUT THE PROPER NUT AND BOLT COMBINATION, THE NUT CAN LOOSEN PREMATURELY AND ALLOW THE BOLT TO COME OUT WHICH COULD ALLOW THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT TO BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT.

The risk

LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL COULD OCCUR, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE NUT AND BOLT COMBINATION. IF THE IMPROPER COMBINATION IS INSTALLED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE IT WITH A NEW NUT AND BOLT. IF THE COMBINATION IS CORRECT, DEALERS WILL RE-TORQUE THE EXISTING COMBINATION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 21, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MONACO AT 1-800--685-6545.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 06V426000.
