NHTSA campaign 06V404000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Sidump'r Trailer Company: Service Brakes, Air

Sidump'r Trailer Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 24, 2006 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 41. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN TRAILERS, DURING MANUFACTURE, SOME OF THE PIPE FITTINGS WERE DRILLED TOO DEEP, RESULTING IN A THIN WALL IN THE MALE PIPE THREAD. THE MALE PIPE THREAD MAY BREAK OFF DURING OR AFTER ASSEMBLY.

The risk

IF THE FITTING FAILS WHILE IN USE, THE AIR BRAKE SYSTEM COULD DEPRESSURIZE, CAUSING THE BRAKES TO ENGAGE SUDDENLY, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL QUARANTINE THE VEHICLES AND REPLACE DEFECTIVE FITTING FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SIDUMP'S AT 402-582-4830.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 06V404000.
