NHTSA campaign 06V336000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Wilson Trailer Company: Structure › Frame and Members

Wilson Trailer Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 7, 2006 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 284. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN GRAIN TRAILERS, A FATIGUE FAILURE (CRACKING) OF THE ALUMINUM ANGLE BEHIND THE KING PIN SUPPORT BEAM CAN OCCUR CAUSING DISTORTION OF THE BOTTOM RAIL AND COMPROMISING THE KING PIN ASSEMBLY.

The risk

IF THE ANGLE FAILS BY WAY OF CRACKING OR DEFORMATION, THE BOTTOM RAIL OF THE TRAILER, WHICH SUPPORTS THE BEAM, COULD BE AFFECTED AND COMPROMISE THE STRENGTH OF THE KING PIN ASSEMBLY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE AREA OF CONCERN, MAKE NECESSARY REPAIRS, AND INSTALL A SUPPORT PLATE TO STRENGTHEN THE ANGLE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 5, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT WILSON AT 1-800-798-2002.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 06V336000.
