NHTSA campaign 06V206000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Genmar Holdings, Inc.: Trailer Hitches

Genmar Holdings, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 12, 2006 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 3,608. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN BOAT TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH A RETRACTABLE TONGUE WERE MANUFACTURED INCORRECTLY. THE STEEL FRAME INSERT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INSERTED INTO THE BRAKE ACTUATOR HOUSING AT THE CORRECT DISTANCE BEFORE THE PARTS WERE WELDED TOGETHER.

The risk

IF THE RETRACTABLE TONGUE WAS NOT MANUFACTURED CORRECTLY, THE BOTTOM OF THE TOP INSERT COULD CRACK IN THE AREA OF THE GAP. IF THE INSERT CRACKS WITH THE TRAILER IN SERVICE, THE TONGUE COULD BUCKLE CONTACTING THE ROAD SURFACE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPAIR THE TRAILERS AS NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 22, 2006. OWNERS MAY CALL 615-494-2084 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 06V206000.
