NHTSA campaign 06V130000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A.: Steering › Steering Wheel/Handle Bar

Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 24, 2006 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 6,746. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE BOLT THAT ATTACHES THE STEERING DAMPER BODY TO THE FRAME BRACKET MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED SUFFICIENTLY DURING VEHICLE ASSEMBLY.

The risk

IF THE BOLT LOOSENS AND BACKS OUT COMPLETELY, THE STEERING DAMPER COULD INHIBIT FREE MOVEMENT OF THE STEERING ASSEMBLY CAUSING A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. THIS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE STEERING DAMPER BOLT TO THE PROPER TORQUE AND INSPECT THE DAMPER MOVEMENT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 28, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KAWASAKI AT 1-866-802-9381.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 06V130000.
