NHTSA campaign 05V491000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Skyline Corporation: Equipment › Other › Labels

Skyline Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 24, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 90. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN TRAVEL TRAILERS AND FIFTH WHEEL TRAILERS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110 "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS." THE TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION PLACARD CONTAINS INCORRECT INFORMATION REGARDING THE MAXIMUM CARGO CARRYING CAPACITY.

The risk

IF THE CARGO WEIGHT IS EXCEEDED AND THE TRAILER OVERLOADED, THE EXCESS WEIGHT CAN CAUSE HANDLING PROBLEMS, IRREGULAR TIRE WEAR, TIRE FAILURE OR OTHER DAMAGE. AN OVERLOADED TRAILER IS HARD TO STOP WHICH COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. THIS COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

The remedy

OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH NEW TIRE INFORMATION PLACARDS AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 27, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SKYLINE AT 1-800-962-7773.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V491000.
