NHTSA campaign 05V415000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Ford Motor Company: Parking Brake › Driveline › Hydraulic

Ford Motor Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 19, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 6,298. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MEDIUM DUTY CHASSIS CAB VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH HYDRAULIC BRAKES, THE DRIVE LINE PARK BRAKE ANCHOR BOLT MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO FATIGUE LOADING. THE BOLT COULD FRACTURE OVER TIME DUE TO INSUFFICIENT CLAMP LOAD AS A RESULT OF IMPROPER ANCHOR BOLT PLATING.

The risk

IF THE PARK BRAKE ANCHOR BOLT FATIGUES AND ULTIMATELY FRACTURES, THE PARK BRAKE MAY NOT FUNCTION AND THERE MAY BE NO INDICATION TO THE DRIVER OF THE MALFUNCTION WHEN THE PARK BRAKE IS SET. THIS MAY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY WITHOUT WARNING, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PARK BRAKE ANCHOR BOLT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 6, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V415000.
