NHTSA campaign 05V111000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Mack Trucks, Inc: Power Train › Axle Assembly

Mack Trucks, Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 24, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 39. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH THE FXL AXLE AND MERITOR 16.5 X 5 BRAKES WITH DUST SHIELDS, THERE MAY BE INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE DUST SHIELD MOUNTING BOLT AND THE KNUCKLE ON THE FRONT AXLE. AS A RESULT OF THE INTERFERENCE, THE BOLT JOINT BETWEEN THE WHEEL END AND THE KNUCKLE MAY NOT MEET THE TORQUE REQUIREMENTS.

The risk

THIS COULD RESULT IN VIBRATION OR BRAKE PERFORMANCE ISSUES. BRAKING CAPABILITY WOULD BE DIMINISHED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE HUB AND BRAKE ASSEMBLY TO INSTALL A NEW DUST SHIELD FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 17, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MACK TRUCKS 610-709-2131.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V111000.
