Blue Bird Body Company: Exterior Lighting › Brake Lights
Blue Bird Body Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 8, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 22. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES, A CIRCUIT DESIGN RESULTED IN A 12.1 AMP CIRCUIT DRAW IN THE BRAKE LIGHT CIRCUIT WHEN IT IS PROTECTED BY A 10 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER.
The risk
THE CURRENT DRAW MAY CAUSE THE CIRCUIT BREAKER TO FAIL RESULTING IN A LOSS OF BRAKE LIGHTS WITH NO WARNING TO THE DRIVER BEFORE OR AFTER THE FUSE BLOWS. A FOLLOWING DRIVER MAY NOT KNOW WHEN THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN APPLIED, AND A REAR-END CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE CIRCUIT TO INCORPORATE RELAYS TO REDUCE CURRENT DRAW IN THE FUSED CIRCUIT TO LESS THAN 10 AMPERES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 2, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BLUE BIRD AT 478-825-2021.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V044000.
