NHTSA campaign 04V573000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Harley-Davidson Motor Company: Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Antilock/Traction Control/Electronic Limited Slip › Abs Warning Light

Harley-Davidson Motor Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 6, 2004 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 72. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN POLICE MOTORCYCLES WERE BUILT WITH A DEFECTIVE WIRING HARNESS. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS ) IS WIRED THROUGH THE SAME FUSE CIRCUIT AS THE ABS MALFUNCTION WARNING LIGHT.

The risk

THE OPERATOR OF THE MOTORCYCLE WOULD LOSE POWER TO THE ABS WARNING LIGHT AT THE SAME TIME HE LOSES POWER TO THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM IF THIS PARTICULAR FUSE WOULD BLOW. THE WARNING LIGHT WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE DUE TO THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE MOTORCYCLE AND THE OPERATOR MIGHT NOT BE AWARE THAT THE ABS BRAKES WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL. THE GAUGES ARE ALSO WIRED THROUGH THIS FUSE CIRCUIT AND, SHOULD THIS FUSE FLOW, WOULD ALSO CEASE TO FUNCTION.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS. THE RECALL BEGAN DECEMBER 27, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-343-4056.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 04V573000.
