NHTSA campaign 04V436000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America, Inc.: Structure › Body

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 8, 2004 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,609. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE CAB MAIN HOOK AND THE SURROUNDING COMPONENTS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT. REPEATED NORMAL CAB TILTING OPERATION COULD CAUSE THE CAB TILT SYSTEM COMPONENTS TO BECOME DAMAGED IN THE AREA OF THE CAB MAIN HOOK.

The risk

IF DAMAGE OCCURS, THE CAB MAIN HOOK COULD LATCH IMPROPERLY, AND IN THE WORST CASE, THE CAB COULD TILT FORWARD DURING NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION. A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CAB HOOK, LOCK LEVER AND CONTROL LEVER BRACKET WITH MODIFIED COMPONENTS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 28, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI FUSO AT 1-877-711-0707.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 04V436000.
