NHTSA campaign 04V098000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Hino Motors Sales U.S.A., Inc.: Exterior Lighting › Back Up Lights

Hino Motors Sales U.S.A., Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 25, 2004 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 255. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." A REVERSE BACKUP SWITCH MAY HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THE NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH MAY NOT ALLOW THE CRUISE CONTROL TO ENGAGE.

The risk

THIS DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD. ALSO, THIS COULD CAUSE THE CRUISE CONTROL NOT TO BE ACTIVATED. THE REVERSE BACKUP LIGHT AND BUZZER STAYS ON.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SWITCHES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON APRIL 19, 2004. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HINO AT 1-845-365-1400.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 04V098000.
