Setra of North America: Electrical System
Setra of North America reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 20, 2004 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 117. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
CERTAIN MOTOR COACHES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 101, "CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS." THE ILLUMINATION OF THE CONTROLS FOR THE HAZARD WARNING SIGNAL, HEATING/AIR-CONDITIONING FAN, AND WINDSHIELD DEFROSTING AND DEFOGGING SYSTEM HAS ONLY ONE LEVEL OF BRIGHTNESS AND IS NOT ADJUSTABLE. THE CORRECT BRIGHTNESS SHOULD PROVIDE AT LEAST TWO LEVELS OF BRIGHTNESS AND BE ADJUSTABLE.
The risk
IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR DURING A NIGHT-TIME SITUATION THIS COULD CAUSE THE DRIVER NOT TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS AND INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy
SETRA TECHNICIANS WILL GO TO CUSTOMER LOCATIONS AND REPLACE THE CONTROL SWITCH. THIS RECALL BEGAN APRIL 6, 2004, WITH PHASED COMPLETION DATES. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SETRA AT 1-800-882-8054.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 04V091000.
