Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc.: Steering › Hydraulic Power Assist › Pump
Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jan 28, 2004 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 110. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN MOTORHOMES BUILT ON SPARTAN CHASSIS, THE ANGLE OF THE HOSES FROM THE HYDRAULIC PUMP COULD CONTACT THE POSITIVE STUD ON THE STARTER.
The risk
THIS COULD RESULT IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE STARTER AND CAUSE IGNITION OF HYDRAULIC FLUID WHICH COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
The remedy
SPARTAN IS CONDUCTING THE OWNER NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. DEALERS WILL REPLACE ON VEHICLES WITH CUMMINS ISL ENGINES AND 39MT DELCO STARTERS AT LEAST ONE OF THE 45 DEGREE FITTINGS WITH A 90 DEGREE FITTING AND ALSO REPLACE THE HOSE ASSEMBLY. ON ISL AND ISC ENGINES WITH 42MT DELCO STARTER, DEALERS WILL CHANGE ONE FITTING AT THE REAR OF THE HYDRAULIC PUMP AND RE-ROUTE A HOSE. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SPARTAN AT 1-517-543-6400 OR FLEETWOOD AT 1-800-322-8216.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 04V034000.
