Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc.: Wheels

Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 4, 2003 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 4,933. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN CONVENTIONAL AND FIFTH WHEEL TRAVEL TRAILERS, THE OWNER MANUALS EITHER DO NOT CONTAIN THE WHEEL LUG NUT TORQUE INFORMATION OR CONTAIN INCORRECT WHEEL LUG NUT TORQUE INFORMATION FOR THE OPTIONAL "ALUMINUM WHEEL"

The risk

VEHICLE OPERATION WITHOUT THE PROPER TORQUE APPLIED TO THE WHEEL LUG NUTS COULD RESULT IN THE LUG NUTS BECOMING LOOSE AND A WHEEL SEPARATION THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

The remedy

OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A LABEL AND INSERT TO BE ADDED TO THE OWNER'S MANUAL. IF THE VEHICLE HAS THE "ALUMINUM WHEEL" OPTION, OWNERS ARE REQUESTED TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE INTO A DEALER TO HAVE THE WHEEL LUG NUTS TORQUED TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATIONS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN NOVEMBER 26, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FLEETWOOD AT 1-800-445-3307.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 03V437000.
