NHTSA campaign 03V414000 · Part 573 safety recall report

International Truck & Engine Corporation: Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Compressor

International Truck & Engine Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 22, 2003 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 924. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH V8 ENGINES AND AIR BRAKES OR AIR OPERATED PARK BRAKES, A STAND-OFF BRACKET WAS NOT INSTALLED. THE BRACKET SUPPORTS THE COPPER AIR COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE TUBE. NORMAL VEHICLE AND ENGINE VIBRATION CAN CAUSE THE UNSUPPORTED COPPER TUBE TO FAIL AT OR NEAR THE AIR COMPRESSOR CONNECTION.

The risk

A FAILED COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE TUBE COULD DEPLETE THE AIR SYSTEM AND MAY CAUSE THE PARKING BRAKES TO APPLY. THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN OR STOP UNEXPECTEDLY AND RESULT IN A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPAIR THE STAND-OFF BRACKET AS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING DECEMBER 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT INTERNATIONAL TRUCK AT 1-800-448-7825.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 03V414000.
