NHTSA campaign 03V406000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Trail King: Trailer Hitches

Trail King reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 16, 2003 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 47. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN LOW BED TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH A 2" REMOVABLE KINGPIN, THE 2" REMOVABLE KINGPIN WAS PRODUCED WITH A SINGLE PASS WELD CONNECTING THE MOUNT TUBE AND 2" KINGPIN. SPECIFICATIONS REQUIRE A TRIPLE PASS WELD IN THIS AREA. ABNORMAL UPWARD FORCE CAN SEPARATE THE MOUNTING TUBE FROM THE 2" KINGPIN.

The risk

IF THIS 2" REMOVABLE KINGPIN IS NOT REPLACED, THE TRAILER CAN SEPARATE FROM THE TOW VEHICLE AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.

The remedy

OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A REPLACEMENT 2" REMOVABLE KINGPIN. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DURING OCTOBER 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT TRAIL KING AT 1-605-996-6482.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 03V406000.
