NHTSA campaign 03V330000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Gulf Stream Coach Inc.: Trailer Hitches

Gulf Stream Coach Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 3, 2003 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 63. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES BUILT ON THE WORKHORSE W22 CHASSIS, THE DROP DOWN BRACKETS USED TO ATTACH THE HITCH TO THE FRAME RAIL EXTENSIONS MAY NOT BE ADEQUATE.

The risk

IN THE EVENT THAT THESE ANGLE BRACKETS WOULD FAIL, THE HITCH AND THE TOW VEHICLE COULD BECOME DISLODGED FROM THE MOTOR HOME INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

GULF STREAM HAS DEVELOPED A REPAIR KIT CONSISTING OF STEEL BRACKETS, SPACERS, AND MECHANICAL FASTENERS. THIS KIT CAN BE SENT DIRECTLY TO YOU OR TO A REPAIR FACILITY OF YOUR CHOOSING. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING SEPTEMBER 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT GULF STREAM AT 1-800-482-6456, EXT. 3743.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 03V330000.
