Environmental Products Group: Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Disc › Caliper
Environmental Products Group reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 21, 2003 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 19. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN STREET SWEEPERS, AS THE BRAKE PADS WEAR, THE BRAKE CALIPERS ON THE REAR AXLE CAN COME INTO CONTACT WITH A BRACKET ON THE CHASSIS. THIS CAUSES THE CALIPER TO DEFLECT DURING BRAKE APPLICATION, INTRODUCING A BENDING MOMENT INTO THE CALIPER MOUNTING BOLTS. THE MOUNTING BOLT CAN EVENTUALLY BREAK ALLOWING THE CALIPER TO ROTATION OUT OF POSITION, CAUSING A LOSS OF BRAKING FUNCTION ON THE REAR AXLE.
The risk
THIS CONDITION INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE BRAKING SYSTEM ON THESE VEHICLES. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH OR APRIL 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT EPG/ATHEY AT 1-847-741-5370.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 03V110000.
