Chance Coach, Inc.: Power Train › Manual Transmission
Chance Coach, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 23, 2002 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 109. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN STREETCARS (DIESEL AND CNG MODELS) AND RT-52 DIESEL COACHES MANUFACTURED WITH AT-545 AND MT643 TRANSMISSIONS WHICH USE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE. THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE MAY RUB AGAINST THE JUNCTION BOX POWER STUD LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE JUNCTION BOX.
The risk
LONG-TERM WEAR CAN ALLOW THE POWER STUD TO SHORT TO GROUND THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE, RESULTING IN ELECTRICAL ARCING AND THE IGNITION OF COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS IN THE JUNCTION BOX COMPARTMENT.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLE TO DETERMINE IF EITHER THE POWER STUD INSULATION BOOT AND/OR THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE CLAMP IS MISSING. BOTH THE INSULATION BOOT AND THE CLAMP WILL BE INSTALLED IF MISSING. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHANCE COACH AT 1-888-391-1777.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 02V192000.
