NHTSA campaign 02V173000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Ic Corporation: Structure › Frame and Members

Ic Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 12, 2002 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 123. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN SCHOOL BUSES EQUIPPED WITH AN OPTIONAL BETWEEN-THE-FRAME MOUNTED FUEL TANKS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (FMVSS) NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY." THESE BUSES WERE BUILT WITH THE WRONG CROSSMEMBER. THE CROSSMEMBER INSTALLED WAS NOT OF THE SAME STRENGTH THAT WAS USED IN THE CERTIFICATION OF THE FUEL SYSTEM TO FMVSS NO. 301.

The risk

FAILURE OF THE CROSSMEMBER DURING A CRASH COULD REDUCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE INTEGRITY OF THE FUEL SYSTEM ALLOWING LEAKAGE THAT EXCEEDS REGULATION REQUIREMENTS. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW CROSSMEMBER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 29, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT AMTRAN AT 1-800-843-5615.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 02V173000.
