NHTSA campaign 02V140000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Bayerische Motoren Werke: Service Brakes, Hydraulic

Bayerische Motoren Werke reported this defect to federal regulators on May 20, 2002 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 522. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE SCREWS THAT ATTACH THE REAR BRAKE CALIPER TO THE REAR SWING ARM WERE NOT TIGHTENED CORRECTLY DURING ASSEMBLY. THE SCREWS COULD LOOSEN DURING VEHICLE OPERATION AND EVENTUALLY FALL-OUT, ALLOWING THE REAR CALIPER TO SEPARATE FROM ITS MOUNT.

The risk

IF THE CALIPER BECOMES TRAPPED BETWEEN THE REAR WHEEL AND THE SWING ARM, IT COULD DISCONNECT FROM THE BRAKE LINE, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF REAR BRAKING CAPABILITY AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL CHECK THE TORQUE OF THE REAR BRAKE CALIPER ATTACHMENT SCREWS AND RETIGHTEN THEM TO THE PROPER VALUE IF NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 15, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 02V140000.
