International Truck and Engine: Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings
International Truck and Engine reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 24, 2001 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 68. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 121, "AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS." A SECONDARY BRAKE LINE THAT CONNECTS THE FOOT VALVE WITH THE SPRING BRAKE VALVE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED.
The risk
IF THERE IS FAILURE IN THE PRIMARY SYSTEM AND THE SECONDARY BRAKE LINE HAS NOT BEEN INSTALLED, ONLY THE FRONT BRAKES WOULD ACTUATE, WITH REAR SPRING BRAKE ACTUATION. THIS WOULD RESULT IN AN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND CORRECT INCOMPLETE AIR LINE INSTALLATIONS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 9, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT INTERNATIONAL AT 1-800-448-7825.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 01V299000.
