Ford Motor Company: Child Seat
Ford Motor Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 4, 2000 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 12. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN CREW VANS FAILED TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THESE VEHICLES, WHICH ARE DESIGNATED AS TRUCKS, ARE 5 PASSENGER VEHICLES WITH THREE DESIGNATED SEATING POSITIONS IN THE SECOND ROW SEATS. THEY WERE BUILT WITHOUT CHILD SEAT TETHER ANCHORAGE BRACKETS IN THE CENTER POSITION OF THE SECOND ROW SEAT. ALSO THE OWNER GUIDES DO NOT ADDRESS THE CHILD SEAT TETHER ANCHORAGES IN THE CENTER SECOND ROW SEAT POSITION.
The risk
IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE CHILD SEAT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY ATTACHED INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE CHILD.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE CHILD SEAT TETHER ANCHORAGES AT THE CENTER SECOND ROW SEATING POSITION, AND ALSO REPLACE THE VEHICLE OWNER GUIDES WITH NEW VERSIONS PROVIDING THE REQUIRED WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS. ELEVEN VEHICLES ARE AT DEALERSHIPS AND ASSEMBLY PLANT PERSONNEL WILL REPAIR THESE UNITS AT THE AFFECTED DEALERSHIPS. ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THE RETURN OF THE ONE UNIT THAT HAD BEEN SOLD. NO OTHER OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BE REQUIRED.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 00V304000.
