Tires

Tire size LT225/75R16. Tires are OEM on 2021 Ram Promaster 3500 - Purchased New in February 2022. Vehicle has 24,500 miles and tires are regularly rotated. Presure check of tires showed tires were at proper inflation for vehicle. TPMS did not issue a warning, because tire never lost pressure. On February 6, 2024 when driving southbound by mile marker 250 on Interstate 75 in Florida, the steering wheel started feeling funny like I was driving on a really rough road. When I looked out my rear camera, it appeared that tire tread scraps were coming from my vehicle. After slowing down to the breakdown lane, I inspected all four tires and found that tread had separated from the middle of the drivers side rear tire. I was able to slowly make my way to a nearby rest area, when I got help changing the tire out to the spare. The tread separated and caused the van to be unstable. The flying tread pieces were a danger to other vehicles on the road. If I had continued driving, the tire could have exploded causing damage to my van and to other vehicles on the road. Called dealer and was told these tires only have a 90 warranty.

My van began making a loud squeaky sound, louder at low speeds and less at higher speeds. It sounded like it was coming from the wheels or undercarriage. There were no dash warning lights, alarms, or any other indicator of a serious issue. I drove the van around town for a few days approximately 30 miles. The van is heavy and I live in a hilly area, so I use the parking brake fairly often. I applied the parking brake within that week on an incline, and when I released the parking brake and drove forward, the squeak was louder then ever, so much so, people stared. There were no error or warning message on the dash or elsewhere. The parking brake indicator had come on normally while engaged and went off when it was released. I drove it directly to the local Ram dealer, as it seemed worse, hoping it was just in need of minor lubrication. It had just been serviced at the same dealer a few months earlier and I was told "it was like new with its low 12,500 miles". I explained the new noise and that I didn't want to cause damage by driving it, although there were no warning lights on. My van is still under the original warranty for a few more months. Even though they were booked, an employee went out and felt by the rear driver's side wheel and said it was really hot and likely a frozen brake caliper. They were able to fit me in and discovered the parking brake was frozen, which was causing the noise. They ordered the parts to repair, disengaged the parking brake, and said it was sa

While preparing for a trip, I noticed the upper kitchen cabinetry is detaching from the ceiling and in danger of falling. This section is part of the cabinetry housing the microwave. The detaching cabinet has a glass plate attached to the bottom as a heat guard for the stove directly below it. The stove also has a glass top. It has the potential to injury an occupant both by its weight and glass breakage during travel or when stationary. Occupants can be sitting directly across from the cabinet on the couch which has seat belts. There is a 16 inch aisle between the stove top and the edge of the couch. I'm not sure if this is the appropriate type of safety issue for your agency, but I felt it could surely injure occupants in the kitchen area.

The component that failed/malfunctioned is the CV axle, the part is no longer available for inspection. The safety risk posed is loss of control of the vehicle, subsequent damage to other vital steering and stability parts such as the wheel bearings, axles, alignment, and lower ball joint. The problem has been confirmed by a RAM dealership, and corrected under an extended warranty. The component has not been inspected outside of the RAM dealership technicians and potentially the warranty provider. There were no warning lights or indicators from the computer/OBD. Physical symptoms and signs included uncontrollable vehicle shaking/vibration, and difficulty maintaining control at high speeds. Other symptoms/signs may include the frequent need for realignment, and unique tire tread wear patterns. Symptoms appeared around 58,000 original miles. With a fleet of these vans, this problem has been noted more than once.

There were two recalls for the Carefree Awning unexpectedly deploying on Winnebago Travato camper vans. I recently went in for the 2nd recall and after completing it, the awning failed when the shop was testing it after completing the recall. Recall letter arrived on April 8th and called my dealer (McLain’s in Denton) on April 9th, and they ordered parts. They texted on June 13th to say the parts had arrived. I called and scheduled the first slot. I arrived on Jun 24th at 9am. By early afternoon, the lead tech came to visit me and said this recall was very complicated, and it appeared it would not be complete that day. My wife drove the 80+ mile round trip to pick me up that afternoon. On Tuesday (6/25) about mid-day they called and said they were done, but when testing it, the awning shot out at high speed. They said the wedge had been installed, which was supposed to prevent this issue, so I don’t understand how it failed. They said there were ordering a new motor. I sent emails to both Winnebago and Carefree to alert them to this failure and ask that they investigate how this recall did not solve the issue of awning deployment from a broken gear. Winnebago responded, "We would recommend McClain's review this issue with our tech support. If the awning recall is done properly, this should not happen. The recall remedy has been thoroughly tested and approved by NHTSA.” I replied to them and ask them to reach out to McClain’s and do a thorough investigation. On Wednesday (6/26

The blind spot monitoring function frequently disables while driving this vehicle. This occurs more often during warmer weather and in my case only seems to happen when the brakes are applied. For a few minutes after each "blind spot disabled" warning, you cannot reset the blind spot alert function through the touchscreen system. This is a safety issue because you often don't notice that the blind spot alert is disabled and expect to see or hear the blind spot warning when driving if an approaching vehicle is in your blind spot. This issue seems to primarily affect 2021 Ram Promaster vans. There are many posts in the ram promaster online forum about it @ [XXX] . My dealer connected my promaster to their computer just after the disable warning and there was no indication that it had happened--even though you could visually see that the blind spot monitor was off in the vehicle touchscreen monitor. They kept the vehicle for an afternoon and could not determine what was causing this malfunction. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We also have 4 more now that have to wait for dealerships to have room for them. Between the 2 dealerships within 6 miles of our business headquarters, they currently have almost 70 ProMasters with transmission problems and can only fix one at a time due to lack of parts. Some wont shift out of first, some wont shift into drive at all, and only work in reverse. The danger comes from not being able to shift while on busy roadways. leaving drivers stranded sometimes many miles from our fleet people that can help them get back to headquarters. Every time the vehicle is driven downhill for an extended period, such as over a mountain pass, the brake system light comes on and can only be turned off by stopping the vehicle and turning the car off. This has happened every time I go over a mountain pass for the last 1-1/2 years. I have reported this to the Ram dealer and have been told that this is a known issue on Ram Promasters and that there is no resolution by multiple technicians. It is disconcerting every time it comes on, but I worry that when I really have a brake issue I will not know it since the brake light comes on all the time already.

Sir/ma'am GM. The issue with the PROMASTER is water getting into the engine bay. It appears that gaps appear in between the windshield and the cowling. Researched multiple social media posts and this is a growing issue with the PROMASTER. Water flows through the center of the cowling and accumulates on the engine and other electrical components within the engine bay. This creates a safety hazard while not while driving but also while parked.

Seats
Filed Feb 10, 2023MA

When the vehicle is being driven, if a person is sitting in the rear seat of the RV while wearing the seat belt, any slight bump or uneven pavement causes their body to repeatedly bounce erratically up and down. The RV is sold stating that they have seats in the rear (2 lap belts in sofa) which is why I purchased the vehicle. From my first experience of sitting in this seat, it is not functional and cannot be used when the RV is in transit without compromising someone's safety. This was brought to the attention of the dealer and the warranty company. They went for a test drive and experienced the same situation. At my appointment with the warranty company , they inspected it and confirmed my problem. They said it was not something they were able to fix, nor was it covered under warranty. They did state "test drove...the rear pull out bed does seem bouncy, it unfortunately appears to be the quality of this design" and suggested I call the manufacturer to discuss further. When I called the manufacturer, Thor Motor Coach Inc., the representative was unaware of this problem but thanked me for letting them know and said they would look to fix this problem in future designs. They proceeded to tell me there is nothing they can do for me and denied offering any compensation or adjustments with my vehicle. This vehicle is a new Thor motorcoach model 18m with onboard propane system. Within the first 2 weeks of ownership i turned on the propane and immediately a rubber propane hose burst at a bend and started leaking propane. I was able to shut off the supply at the tank and get it in for repair where they replaced the hose. On December 3rd we drove the van 9 hours to Disney and parked for check in. upon return from check in I smelled propane and heard hissing under the van again. The fire department was called to the scene and they found the main fitting on the inlet of the tank leaking. It bled about 3/8 of the propane before they secured it enough that I was able to get it home. I took it to the dealer again for repair yesterday and they made a repair. I left the dealer with 1/4 tank of propane. This morning there was a very strong smell of propane again and my tank is empty. I have notified them again and am waiting....... I am unaware of where it is leaking from now, but I have lost all faith in the safety of this propane system and thor motorcoach quality control.

Blind Spot Detection (BSD) goes off randomly when driving. Not having the BSD on obviously makes the driver more likely to change lanes into another vehicle. In addition, when it goes off an alert sound and text scrolls on the dash, distracting the driver for several second. In addition, it takes the driver's eyes off the road to turn it back on (have to go through several pages to get to the BSD option). There are multiple PromasterForum complaints about this (many people are having this problem) - two solutions have been identified, but RAM has not acknowledged the problem. Blind spot monitor system was disabled until recently since I purchased the 2022 Jayco Swift January 2022. Went to local Dodge dealer on July 11, 2022 to have them look at the Blind spot monitor and other items, see attached document item #3. I then learned from the Dodge Promaster Forum that many other owners had the same problem with the blind spot monitor would get disabled while driving with Promaster vans going back to 2016 at least. The Dodge technician could not diagnose the problem due to the original radio being replaced by the Jayco RV company, he could not see the signal from the computer to the blind spot sensors see note in item #3 from Rainier Dodge. I took the RV into the dealership that I purchased the RV from Valley RV Supercenter in Kent, WA on August 17, 2022. The technician there showed me how to activate the blind spot monitor system through the installed radio, but we were not able to verify it was working in the deal's lot. So it was agreed that I would verify that it was working on the drive home. Got on the road and it was working great, but while driving south on I-5 I hit some traffic and while driving in traffic I witnessed the system turning itself off in heavy traffic when it was most important to have it on. It made making lane changes in traffic more difficult and more dangerous. Could not turn on the system again while the vehicle was moving. The blind spot detection system randomly turns itself off. The problem is the van is quite large with lots of blind spots, and you think the system is working because you have it turned on and it turns off by itself. Chrystler is not concerned with the problem, nor do they have a fix for it. This a safety concern that needs an immediate fix. The potential for loss of life is extremely high with this defect.

Steering
Filed Mar 6, 2022VT

The vehicle that I have is the very short wheelbase of the Ram Promaster, the 118” one which is shorter than anything that Ford Transit of Sprinter has. The issue is that the steering is horribly sensitive, meaning that if you move the steering wheel even a tiny bit the vehicle moves a lot. It is similar to the old days of those short wheelbase Jeeps and you hear of people complaining in about steering themselves off the road. I also own a short vehicle being a Volvo XC60 but that is fine compared to this. The safety issue here, is that if a driver is not as experienced and takes their eyes off the road even for an instance that any normal reaction to the steering wheel could be deadly. I am older, in my 50’s with a a lot of experience driving and even I am nervous about this, to the point that if I sneezed I would worry about a slight movement pushing me off the road or into oncoming traffic. My question is, is there oversight on standards for a minimum amount of steering per how it affects the vehicle? I have talked with other owners of same vehicle, but they have the longer wheelbase, they have no issues, so it leads me to wonder if Ram uses the same steering on all vans, which would explain the problem, as there needs to be different steering for a very short wheelbase like mine vs a longer wheelbase vehicle. It is so bad that I will not let any of my 3 daughters drive this van. Also, when I first purchased this van new, I did reach out to Ram about this and never heard a
