“Takata recall. My recall was completed. However, when I picked my car up after the repair, my airbag light was on. I picked it up at close and noticed the light was one when I got to the light basically next door from the dealership. I called immediately as I couldn't turn around as they had closed. I left a message for jeremy who took care of the paperwork less than 5 mins after leaving. No return call.”
Owner complaint, filed Jan 30, 2019
“My airbag warning light lit up on the dash cluster. (concomitantly, I noticed that the steering wheel controls for the horn, radio and cruise control also stopped working.) research showed GM recall 14139 for failure of spiral cable assembly (connected to airbag module, horn, cruise control and radio); however, we were told that this car was not among the recalled vehicles. How is that possible?”

Defect. Toyota Motor Company (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Scion xB, 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2007 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2006-2011 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, and 2009-2010 Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.
Risk. If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found. If abnormality is found, the PWMS circuit board will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 20, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is C0M.

Defect. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
Risk. If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.
Remedy. Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors sent Pontiac Vibe owners an Interim letter on June 20, 2014 notifying them that parts are currently unavailable. General Motors sent notices to the Pontiac Vibe owners on September 15, 2014, that a remedy is available. The recall began on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-762-2737.

Defect. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.
Risk. If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.
Remedy. Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. Those owners may contact Pontiac Customer Care at 1-800-762-2737.

Defect. GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PONTIAC VIBE PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
Risk. A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
Remedy. GENERAL MOTORS WILL NOTIFY CUSTOMERS WHEN A RECALL REMEDY IS AVAILABLE FOR RECALL 10038: FLOOR MAT INTERFERENCE AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL. GM REQUESTS THAT CUSTOMERS TAKE OUT ANY REMOVABLE (CARPETED, ALL-WEATHER, OR OTHER) DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT AND NOT REPLACE IT WITH ANY OTHER FLOOR MAT, AND PLACE IT IN THE TRUNK UNTIL THE FLOOR MAT INTERFERENCE AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL RECALL REMEDY IS READY AND IMPLEMENTED. IN THE EVENT THAT OWNERS CHOOSE NOT TO TAKE OUT THEIR REMOVABLE FLOOR MAT, GENERAL MOTORS STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THAT OWNERS USE ONLY FLOOR MATS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE MODEL AND MODEL YEAR OF THEIR VEHICLE, AND THAT IT IS PROPERLY INSTALLED AND SECURED. DO NOT USE A MAT THAT IS FLIPPED OVER WITH THE BOTTOM-SIDE UP, AND DO NOT STACK ONE FLOOR MAT OVER ANOTHER. IN ADDITION, CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE ACCELERATOR, BRAKE, AND CLUTCH (IF APPLICABLE) PEDALS TO ASSURE THAT THE FLOOR MAT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH THEM. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Defect. GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PONTIAC VIBE VEHICLES. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.
Risk. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY BECOME HARD TO DEPRESS, SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy. DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BAR IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHICH WILL ALLOW THE PEDAL TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN EARLY FEBRUARY AND BE COMPLETED IN LATE APRIL 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Defect. GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 PONTIAC VIBE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 1.8L ENGINE AND ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALASKA, COLORADO, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, IOWA, KANSAS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEVADA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, NORTH DAKOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WHEN DRIVING UNDER CERTAIN UNIQUE CONDITIONS IN EXTREMELY LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SUCTION PORT FOR THE BRAKE VACUUM CAN BECOME LOCKED DUE TO THE FREEZING OF CONDENSATION RESULTING FROM POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION.
Risk. THIS COULD LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
Remedy. DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE BRAKE VACUUM LINE FREE OF CHARGE. A SPECIAL ADVISORY LETTER WILL BE SENT TO OWNERS OF VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE OCTOBER 23, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at …

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Toyota 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine in my 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT suffers from excessive oil consumption due to a known piston ring defect. The rapid oil loss between changes puts the engine at risk of failure. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? This issue poses a serious safety risk because: 1.Oil levels drop unpredictably, increasing the risk of sudden engine failure while driving, which could lead to accidents. 2.No dashboard warning appears when oil is low, making it difficult to detect before damage occurs. 3.Toyota acknowledged this defect under Warranty Enhancement ZE7, but Pontiac Vibe owners were excluded, despite having the same Toyota-manufactured engine. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Independent mechanics have confirmed the excessive oil consumption, consistent with the known Toyota 2AZ-FE defect. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? •Toyota acknowledged the issue in their vehicles but refused assistance for the Pontiac Vibe GT. •GM has not inspected the vehicle, even though they marketed and sold it. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? •No warning lights indicate low oil level

IT NOW HAS A LITTLE OVER 90K MILES AND USES ABOUT 1.25 QUARTS OF OIL PER 1K MILES. I FOUND THAT TOYOTA ADMITTED TO A PROBLEM WITH THE 2AZ-FE ENGINES THAT ARE IN THEIR MATRIX AND CAMRYS, AS WELL AS THE PONTIAC VIBE, AND HAVE OFFERED THE ZE7 WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM TO REPLACE THE PISTONS AND RINGS IN THESE PRODUCTS TO CORRECT THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE. I CONTACTED GM SERVICE TO SEE IF THEY WERE GOING TO OFFER THE SAME PROGRAM FOR THESE ENGINES SINCE THEY PURCHASED THESE DEFECTIVE ENGINES FROM TOYOTA. THEY RESPONDED BY SAYING THAT THERE WERE NO OPEN SERVICE PROGRAMS OPEN FOR THIS CAR. I ASKED THEM WHY GM WOULDN'T ADMIT TO THE PROBLEM AS TOYOTA DID, AND OFFER A PROGRAM SIMILAR TO THE TOYOTA PROGRAM TO RESOLVE THE ISSUES WITH THIS ENGINE. THEY RESPONDED AGAIN BY SAYING THAT THERE WERE NO OPEN SERVICE ISSUES FOR THIS VEHICLE. THE 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX, WHICH SHARES THE SAME ENGINE, HAD A RECALL ISSUED. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A HIGHWAY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND ABS WARNING ILLUMINATED, DISTRACTING THE DRIVER. THERE WAS NO COLLISION, BUT A NEAR MISS.

I AM HAVING ISSUE WITH EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION FOR THE LAST 6-9 MONTHS. BEFORE I HIT 3000 MILES THE OIL HAS BURNED UP AND THERE IS NOTHING ON THE DIP STICK. I TOOK IT TO GOODYEAR AND THEY SAID TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I TOOK IT TO ED RINKE IN CENTERLINE MI, WHERE I PURCHASED MY CAR AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND WHY IT WAS HAPPENING. WHEN I TOOK IT FOR MY LAST OIL CHANGE AT GOODYEAR IN WARREN MI THEY SAID THERE MIGHT BE A RECALL. I HAVE FOUND A FORUM WERE OTHERS WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND UPON RESEARCHING IT APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH SOME OF THE TOYOTA'S AS WELL. I OCCASIONALLY NOTICE A BURNING SMELL WHEN I AM DRIVING BUT IT'S NOT ALL THE TIME. I ALSO SOMETIMES EXPERIENCE MY CAR CATCHING WHEN IT'S SHIFTING OR SHAKING WHEN IDLING. I'M NOT SURE IF THESE ISSUES ARE RELATED, BUT WHEN I TAKE IT FOR SERVICE THEY CANNOT SEEM TO FIND WHAT IS CAUSING THE ISSUES. I TOOK IT IN THIS PAST SUNDAY FOR MY LATEST OIL CHANGE BUT THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE LAST YEAR IN APRIL 2018 WHEN I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER FOR THE AIRBAG RECALL.

TAKATA RECALL. NO RETURN CALL. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT WEEK AS LEFT A MESSAGE FOR THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. STILL NO RETURN CALL. I DON'T KNOW IF MY RECALL WAS ACTUALLY COMPLETED CORRECTLY AS THE LIGHT IS STILL ON. AN INDEPENDENT GARAGE CHECKED MY CAR'S COMPUTER AND CONFIRMED THE LIGHT IS ON DUE TO THE AIRBAG. I JUST WANT THE LIGHT OFF AND TO KNOW THE RECALL WAS COMPLETED CORRECTLY. I'VE TRIED CALLING SINCE, BUT I ALWAYS GET VOICEMAIL AND WELL THEY NEVER RETURNED CALLS EVEN WHEN I TRIED TO SCHEDULE THE INITIAL RECALL REPAIR. RECALL REPAIR WAS COMPLETED BY COYLE CHEVROLET IN CLARKSVILLE INDIANA. HOWEVER IT WASN'T DONE CORRECTLY.

I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL NOTICES AND MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO GET MY AIRBAG RECALL REPAIR COMPLETED, BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD SEVERAL TIMES BY 2 DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS THAT THEY EITHER COULD NOT GET THE PART OR THAT I WOULD NEED TO SIGN A DISCLAIMER STATING THAT ANY DAMAGE OCCURRING WHILE THE RECALL REPAIR WAS COMPLETED WOULD BE MY RESPONSIBILITY. THE REASON GIVEN WAS THAT PONTIAC WENT OUT OF BUSINESS AND THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET REPLACEMENT PARTS. I FEEL THIS IS WRONG AND ALL COSTS TO COMPLETE THE RECALL AND FIX ANY DAMAGE SHOULD BE GM'S RESPONSIBILITY. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL FOR POSSIBLE SHRAPNEL COMING THOUGHT THE AIRBAG WHEN DEPLOYED. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE ALLOWING ANYONE TO SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND IF I RESELL THE VEHICLE, THEN WHAT HAPPENS? THE DEALERSHIPS ARE KING BUICK GMC, 16200 FREDERICK ROAD, ROCKVILLE, MD 20877 (WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR), AND CRISWELL AUTOMOTIVE, 503 QUINCE ORCHARD ROAD, GAITHERSBURG (THEY TOLD ME ABOUT THE WAIVER FOR DAMAGE). STEERING - MY 2009 PONTIAC VIBE HAS SERIOUS MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT STEERING ISSUES THAT MAKSE IT FEEL VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. EVEN AT LOW SPEEDS THERE IS A RATTLE THAT COMES FROM THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, IT RATTLES FEELS LOOSE, AND GIVES AN UNCONTROLLED FEELING. MY 2009 HAS ONLY 59,300 MILES ON IT. (APROX. 6,500 A YEAR) THIS CAR HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN HARD, ALL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN DONE ON THE CAR. THERE IS SOMETHING GOING ON WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY COMPLAINTS. THEY CLAIM ITS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. ARE THEY WAITING TILL PEOPLE DIE FROM THE ISSUE? IT MOST DEFINITELY FEELS UNSAFE, WHEN IT FEELS LOOSE IT DOES CAUSE STEERING AND SAFELY ISSUES AT ALL SPEEDS.

PER THE RECALL, I TRIED TO HAVE THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR FIXED AT A GM DEALER. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD NEED TO SIGN A WAIVER FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE DURING THE RECALL REPAIR BECAUSE IF THE DASH OR OTHER PARTS BROKE, THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REPLACE THEM. THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO COVER ALL OF THE REPAIR COSTS TO FIX THIS MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM. ALSO NOTE, THAT ANOTHER GM DEALER, WHERE I GOT BOUGHT THE CAR TOLD THEY COULD NOT EVEN GET THE REPLACEMENT PART ON 3 OCCASIONS.

STARTING ABOUT 80,000 MILE MY CAR STARTED CONSUMING OIL OF GREATER THAN 1 QUART EVERY 1000 MILES. NOW AT 160,000 MILES IT CONSUMES 1 QUART EVERY 500 MILES. I HAVE THE 2.4 L 4 CYLINDER ENGINE THAT CAME FAIRLY STANDARD WITH THIS MODEL YEAR. I HAVE SEEN THIS COMPLAINT ALOT ON WEB PAGES. MY RAV 4 2006 WITH THE SAME ENGINE HAD THE SAME CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. Complaints 1-50 of 528, newest first, reproduced as filed.
Going by the federal record, it is one of the Vibe years to avoid: owners filed 528 complaints, 2.4 times as many as a typical Vibe year. The most common complaint is about the airbags (66%).
What is the most common problem with the 2009 Pontiac Vibe?
The airbags: 350 of the 528 complaints (66%) are about it. Owners most often say it shows an airbag warning light (5%) and sets off warning lights on the dash (4%). The typical report comes at 93,000 miles.
How many recalls does the 2009 Pontiac Vibe have?
9 safety recalls on file with NHTSA, the most recent filed Jan 9, 2018. The largest, 12V491000, covered 2,519,424 vehicles. Recall repairs are free at a dealer; whether a specific car still has one open depends on its VIN.
At what mileage do 2009 Pontiac Vibe problems start?
Half of the complaints that record an odometer reading came in before 56,000 miles. For the airbags the midpoint is 93,000 miles.
Has NHTSA investigated the 2009 Pontiac Vibe?
Yes, 2 times. The latest, EA21002 ("Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture"), was opened Sep 17, 2021 and is still open.
Are there service bulletins for the 2009 Pontiac Vibe?
The manufacturer filed 876 technical service bulletins and other notices for it with NHTSA, most of them about the electrical system (135), the engine (90) and the equipment adaptive/mobility (49). They include a service campaign, General Communication, filed Aug 26, 2024. A bulletin is a repair instruction to dealers, not a recall: the fix is usually free only under warranty.
Reading this record
Complaint volume is well above typical for a single model year.
Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
Most recent recall on file: Jan 9, 2018. Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation.
