- my car started releasing white smoke - i took it to repair shop, stated it was fixed, white smoke continued -car started overheating -Took it to KIA dealership and was told i was responsible for fuel leaking into engine, was told my car was not covered under warranty, I also have an extended warranty at the dealership which they wouldn't honor stating it was not covered -Recently while driving the car flashed Hybrid system Failure and shut off -I was unable to move the car -I had the car towed to the original dealer (wiz autos) and it has been there since May 2023, it is now 4 months and the car still does not work -Wiz autos informed me the car had a "lock on it" and will need to be released by KIA its been 4 months with no answers from KIA, I have been having an issue with the coolant leaking into the engine since 11/22 and although this is a common problem in these cars(manufacturers defect) KIA will not fix, or replace. I believe the coolant leaking into the engine, is causing the cars to malfunction**** Please take a look at these forums: [XXX] [XXX] Although my car is not listed in this lawsuit by KIA, i believe more cars are affected: A federal court has granted final approval of a class action lawsuit known as In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation , No. 8:17‑cv‑00838‑JLS‑JDE and Flaherty v. During first recall 18V-666, Kia stated that I received a new PRA in September 2019 per recall instructions. July 2023, my car would not turn on and was sent to same Kia dealership. Recall 22V-836 applies to my car, and my PRA shows sign of thermal damage yet again. Both main relays that were replaced in 2019 were of Panasonic, yet, the PRA was melted to the point that the wire harness also needs replacing. This is 2 fire incidences in my 2017 Kia Niro in less than 3.5 years, on the same part.

Few days ago, the check engine light turned on in the dashboard of the Kia Niro 2017 The car was taken to an authorized Kia dealership for diagnostic. The dealership informed that the "Fuel air filter kit & NVLD" needed to be changed at the expenses of the owner. The same issue was described in the "Kia technical service bulletin ... SA395" in the NHTSA website. This bulletin explains that the dealership has to repair this issue under warranty, even if the warranty is expired. The dealership said that this car VIN number is not covered by this bulletin; however, the issue is exactly the same as described in the mentioned document. The car mileage is under 54,000 miles. I would appreciate if NHTSA reviews the list of VIN numbers in order to cover all the cars that present this problem.

I called my local Dealer Nationwide Kia in Timonium Maryland to get an appointment for the required recall. They have so far have been unresponsive, so I called Kia in California. I got a case # of [XXX] after waiting 1:30 mins on the phone. Called back the next week and they said they called the dealer and got no answer but left a message and they sent an email. Called back the next week and they said the dealer never responded and they sent another email. Called back today and sat on the phone with Kia California for another hour and they never answered. I'm very upset that i can't seem to get an appointment for a safety recall, what good does a recall do if the dealer won't answer me and the Kia Zone office can't force them into action. On Friday, December 9, 2022, the heating element in the driver side seat burned through the cushion, burned a hole in my coat, and burned my right leg. Yes, it is available for inspection upon request. Thursday, January 5, 2023, the service department at Kia confirmed the heated seat element had gotten too hot and burned through the seat. Service personnel said the part that needed to be replaced was not under warranty and quoted prices ranging from $600-$1,700 to have it repaired. Other than the service department at Lithia Kia of Anchorage, no other inspection has been done. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the failure. In fact the car had been in the shop the week prior and had a courtesy vehicle inspection.

Back seat got warm & later that morning car engine would not start but lights in vehicle came on. Appt made w/dealer who after a week hadn't done diagnostics nor checked battery & main hybrid fuse as I had requested. I towed to a service garage who upon starting to open the box covering battery, found battery had kindof exploded & bulged. I searched online for recalls on 12/7/22 and found a recall 11/10/22 -22V836000 (KIAs # is SC256) which is "Main Relay within Power Relay Assembly (PRA) may have inadequate connections between its contacts, causing increased electrical resistance, which can overheat the rear seats." "This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 18V-666. Vehicles already repaired under the previous recall will need to have the new remedy completed" I have receipt showing I had did the 1st recall but the recall is not showing up when I search my VIN#. Kia has found some dealers lied & never replaced the part they said they did. My car will be towed tomorrow to a KIA dealer who will look into this issue & what my battery looks like. No warning lights came on prior to the engine not starting. I called KIA cust service for recalls this morning 12/7 and they were no help to me at all seeing the recall isnt showing under my VIN number.

I own a 2017 Kia Niro with 48,000 miles on it. In early February 2022, I received a "system overheating" warning on my dashboard. When I pulled over and checked the engine, I noticed that the coolant overflow reservoir was nearly empty. I had the vehicle towed to a dealership (Destination Kia in Albany, NY), who pressure tested the engine but couldn't find any leaks. They returned the vehicle to me, but a day later I got another overheating warning and this time noticed excessive smoke, along with the coolant reservoir once again being drained. I thus brought it to a different dealer (Matthews Kia in Schenectady, NY), who also could not find a leak, but offered to replace the engine. Several months went by without the repair being completed, so I finally went to Matthews last week for a status update. They informed me that they had several Niro's experiencing similar issues, and that Kia Corporate had sent out a "technical service bulletin" to the dealers informing them that this recurring issue in the Niros is due to faulty EGR coolers. I brought the vehicle back to Destination, hoping that as a larger dealer they could complete the repair more quickly. They have since confirmed that the EGR cooler needs replacing, but quoted me $2500 for the repair, stating that it is not covered under warranty. Considering that this problem has recurred in enough Niros to warrant a technical service bulletin from the corporate office, and the obvious safety issues that an overheating vehic

My 2017 Kia Niro (hybrid) discharges white smoke and overheats while being driven. I brought it to a reputable mechanic immediately. After a thorough inspection, it was discovered that coolant is leaking into the engine because the 'heat exchange recovery unit' is not functioning correctly. There are two similar complaints about the same model vehicle already posted on your site (NHTSA #11442817 & #11457565). A Kia dealership told my mechanic that the part (#28601G5320) is on back order everywhere w/ no availability in sight.

UNKNOWN. Second instance of car not working while driving; this time is was on a highway. Both times "Check Hybrid System" warning comes on. Previously the dealer had to replace entire battery (covered under warranty at the time). This apparently common and may have to do with some fuse. I believe the vehicle shows the battery as completely empty now. I also think my particular Kia Niro should be included in campaign 18V257000. My car is the correct year make and model and I believe something is leaking which could have also caused my battery to fail while driving.

On January 30, 2022 I was driving my 2017 Kia Niro (133,500 miles) when my car broke down. I was driving along at 45 MPH when I had three or so warning lights flash on my dash. I don't clearly remember what they said, but it was something about the hybrid system and then the check engine light came on along with the warning label for the hybrid system again and the car died. I managed to get off the highway and come to a safe stop into a parking lot of a hotel. I tried turning my car off and back on but nothing happened except for the dash panel lights going on saying check hybrid. The last time I did it I waited a couple of minutes before attempting to turn it back on and again, no change. At this point I ended up having to call AAA and had my car towed to my dealership. (40 miles away) Besides being scary to have this happen, I learned that this problem is common in Kia Niro’s. The part I am talking about is the “high voltage fuse”. Evidently manufacturer installs a 125amp fuse and the fuse needed is 175amps. I feel this is a huge problem and will eventually if not already end up causing a serious accident. I look forward to a response and hopefully a solution to get this $434.72 service charge recovered plus tow fees.

On 12/03/2021 I noticed white steam coming from the exhaust of my vehicle. Very shortly after noticing this issue I lost all heat and the engine temperature began to rise. I immediately checked the engine coolant level and noticed the reservoir was empty. On 12/04/2021 an authorized dealer diagnosed the issue as a cracked catalytic converter/heat recovery unit. This assembly allows exhaust gases to heat up engine coolant to improve gas efficiency. When the system fails it allows engine coolant to burn off an causes the vehicle to unexpectedly over heat, hence putting the occupants at great risk. Simple internet research has shown that this is a common problem with this vehicle yet the dealer is refusing to pay for the replacement of this defective part.

The contact had a loaner 2017 Kia Niro. The contact stated while driving and stopping at a red light when the light turned green the contact depressed on the accelerator pedal and was going about 5 MPH when suddenly the power steering failed. The contact manually steered the vehicle and caused the driver to rear-end and crash the vehicle in front of her that also caused that vehicle to rear-end the vehicle in front of them which caused a 3 car accident. There were no warning lights illuminated from the vehicle, The air bag did not deploy. No one was injured. There was no medical treatment needed at the scene. A police report was filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back to the local dealer where they loaned the vehicle to have it returned. The contact was informed a week after the accident there was a recall for that year and model of vehicle for power steering and the contact reached out to a local dealer to inquire if that particular vehicle was part of the recall but did not get any response. The vehicle was repaired. However, the contact was told the vehicle was sold shortly after the repair to an individual without knowing if the vehicle had a recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

I HAVE TRIED ON THREE OCCASIONS TO HAVE THIS RECALL FIXED. EACH TIME, I LEFT THE CAR WITH THE DEALER, WAITED ALL DAY AND WAS TOLD THAT THE WORK WASN'T DONE BECAUSE THAT THEY HAS TO ORDER THE PART. THE FIRST TIME, COVINA KIA, SENT ME AN E-MAIL TELLING ME THAT I HAD CANCELLED THE APPOINTMENT, WHEN THEY CANCELLED IT BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T GET THE PART. THE SECOND TIME, THE PART WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN STOCK BUT WAS AGAIN NOT AVAILABLE. THE LAST TIME WAS WITH CITRUS KIA. I CALLED KIA CUSTOMER CARE, REPORTED THE PROBLEM AND WAS PROMISED THAT IT WOULD BE RESOLVED. AS OF THIS DATE IT HASN'T. I BELIEVE, KIA IS STALLING THIS RECALL BECAUSE THEY DON'T KEEP PARTS IN STOCK. CURRENTLY, I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL FEB. 6, TO HAVE THE WORK DONE. THIS IS LOS ANGELES WITH THOUSANDS OF CARS. KIA DOESN'T KNOW WHY IT DOES THIS. THE LATEST ISSUE IS THE TRANSMISSION FAILING IN TRAFFIC AND THERE BEING NO ACCELERATION. I'VE BEEN IN A LOT OF UNSAFE SITUATIONS BECAUSE OF THESE ISSUES. KIA CORPORATION HAS BEEN INVOLVED AND A TECH HAS BEEN FLOWN OUT TO INVESTIGATE MY CAR. I'M CURRENTLY SUING THEM TO REPURCHASE IT AS A LEMON. THIS COULD BE THE BEGINNING OF ISSUES WITH THIS MODEL. THEY HAVE HAD AIRBAG AND ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH SEVERAL OTHER MODELS HISTORICALLY. NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHY MY CAR KEEPS BREAKING DOWN. I HAVE SEVERAL INVOICES AND PICTURES.

LEASED THE 2017 KIA NIRO EX HYBRID CAR, LATE SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2017 AND DROVE HOME 10+ MILES. ODOMETER HAD 15 MILES AT START. LEFT THE CAR IN THE GARAGE FOR TWO DAYS AND ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE IT EARLY WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2017 AT 4AM. BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE AND WAS STEERING ONTO THE STREET WHEN THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND STEERING WAS VERY DIFFICULT AND NOISY (GROWLING) - VIBRATING WHILE TURNING THE WHEEL ITSELF. PULLED BACK INTO THE GARAGE AND ALL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RETRIED SEVERAL TIMES. WAITED WITH THE CAR IDLING. BATTERY - HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. LET THE CAR SIT AND LOOKED IN THE MANUAL FOR ANSWERS. TRIED BACKING OUT AGAIN AND ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN, AND STEERING WAS AGAIN VERY DIFFICULT. DROVE BACK INTO THE GARAGE. CALLED THE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE NUMBER AND THE FLATBED TRUCK TOOK THE 2017 KIA NIRO EX BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE TOW DRIVER HAD MUCH TROUBLE GETTING THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE AND MANEUVERED ONTO THE FLATBED. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE TO US BECAUSE OF A CATASTROPHIC STEERING FAILURE. RECEIVED CALL FROM SERVICE AT KIA CERRITOS SAYING POWER STEERING MOTOR HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THAT KOREAN ENGINEERS WERE FLYING OUT TO LOOK AT THE CAR PERSONALLY. STILL DO NOT HAVE A CAR, BUT WE ARE IN LIMBO NOW ABOUT THE BRAND ITSELF. WE DO NOT WANT THIS CAR OR A KIA PRODUCT.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
