I WAS DRIVING NORTH ON I-29 IN IOWA SOUTH OF SIOUX CITY AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH (POSTED SPEED LIMIT) TOWING MY LOWE FISHING MACHINE 165 WITH A KARAVAN TRAILER WITH SWING TONGUE; THE WELD DIRECTLY BEHIND SWING-TONGUE COUPLER ON MY KARAVAN TRAILER FAILED. THERE WAS NO SAFETY CHAIN BEHIND THE COUPLER, HAD THE WELD FAILED CATASTROPHICALLY, THE BOAT AND TRAILER WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY FREE, WITH HIGH RISK OF DEATH, INJURY, OR SIGNIFICANT PROPERTY DAMAGE. THE TRAILER (STILL PARTIALLY CONNECTED) DROPPED ONTO THE SPARE TIRE UNTIL I COULD SAFELY PULL OVER. THE BOAT AND TRAILER HAD TO TOWED HOME. I HAD JUST PERFORMED A SAFETY INSPECTION 30 MILES PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, I NOTED NO DAMAGE, THE TRAILER WAS FISHTAILING A BIT IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, AND I STARTED LOOKING FOR A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER.
