Defect. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2021 Infinity Q50, Q60, and QX80 vehicles. A software error may deactivate the audio/video control unit screen, preventing the rear-view image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Risk. A rear-view camera that does not display an image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Dealers will update the control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 14, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21A9.

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AT APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY. SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON IN THE DASH INCLUDING THE CRASH SENSORS, AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL THE CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR WITH NO SUCCESS. ONCE THE START BUTTON IS PUSHED, THE CAR MAKES A CLICKING NOISE BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOT TURN ON. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE NOISE TO STOP IS TO PUSH THE START BUTTON AGAIN. AT THIS TIME, THE CAR WILL NOT START. IT WAS TOWED TO INFINITI DEALERSHIP, AND HAS BEEN THERE AS OF TODAY (03/23/3021) FOR 15 DAYS. NEITHER THE DEALERSHIP, NOR INFINITI NORTH AMERICA HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GIVE ME AN UPDATE ON WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CAR, OR WHEN I WILL GET IT BACK. THEY CAN NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM.

Reading this record

No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
