Case Synopsis: My ownership includes three Hyundai Hybrid vehicles: two 2020 Sonata Hybrids and one 2022 Tucson Hybrid. Each car has consistently manifested engineering defects, predominantly overheating, within a year of purchase. These persistent malfunctions have led to the vehicles being inoperable and beyond repair. As a result, we have endured financial setbacks from negative equity, costs of repairs, reduced value of the cars, and considerable inconvenience and safety hazards due to these ongoing overheating issues.

On June 1, 2023 I was driving on a highway, suddenly lost the ability to accelerate, the car suddenly losing power and a warning message said to leave the road and have hybrid system checked. I pulled over, car idling, reentered highway only able to use low speed ( was 55 mph zone) to get to an exit a short distance away I had to be towed, the warning message still appearing at the dealership but no problem could be identified. This was an extremely dangerous situation, I have not had a problem like this again but remain concerned about a reoccurrence I have reached out to Hyundai about my concerns about 1) how roadside assistance was handled (response obtained) and 2) my concerns about this vehicle failure. I have reached out again this month to Hyundai, last contact they did not have the correct car or case number, have not called back since . This is case #21511789

Driving interstate right lane cruise control set at 73 mph. Car in front of me proceeded to leave lane to the left in order to pass 18 wheeler in front of it. Noticed my car felt different at that time and looked at dashboard to see cruise control now set to 110 mph and speed almost 90 mph. Documented with photo. Disabled cruise with breaking. Shared this on Tucson forums Reddit and Hyundai Forums with confirmation that this has and is happening.

1) Transmission: while driving car jerks. when I’m accelerating from a stop sign or stop light the wheels kind of feel like they’re spinning/shaking and driving over gravel when I accelerate, before it actually starts and shifts gears. Car accelerating but not moving. 2) Not safe. Almost hit other cars around and people. 3) Dealer confirmed and replacing with new transmission. 4) No warning signs

On 9/3/23, driver was waiting at a stop sign to turn left. When driver accelerated into the highway, there was no power and the vehicle would only go 5-10 mph. Warning lights came on to check the hybrid system with the HEV indicator light. Driver pulled over. Restarted car and engine was stuttering. Was able to drive a few miles to a safer location. Started car on 9/4/23, again it had a rough start. Driver waited until the vehicle sounded normal. The vehicle immediately lost power and could not accelerate when on the main road. Called Hyundai and they were unconcerned. We are in remote Alaska, 250 miles from a dealership. Because it happened on a holiday weekend, we have been unable to contact the service department yet. Vehicle is available to be inspected. Safety is a huge risk because the car suddenly stops propelling forward. I'm afraid we will get rear-ended because of the sudden loss of power. It is a danger to ourselves and others. I'm also concerned that we will be stranded because the car has to be stopped when this occurs. We were supposed to be enjoying a trip for a week, and now we don't trust the vehicle and will likely need to go home early and lose hotel costs. This issue will wind up killing someone because there are reports that these Hyundais are stopping in the middle of the highway. Please hold Hyundai accountable.

The car shook and then lights and alarms went off indicating something went wrong with the hybrid system. The car stopped accelerating, would shake, and then accelerated no more than 10 mph. It was absolutely crazy! Luckily, the highway that I was traveling on was not a busy one at the time because all I thought was this could have been a major accident if on a fast moving freeway. I managed to pull over and started reading online about this issue occurring with other customers who purchased the same or similar vehicle. So, I found a post and had shut the car off for 5 minutes, then restart and sit for 10 minutes, and then the car should work. It did! However, during the time of waiting I did reach out to the dealership and they said if the car is working there is nothing they could do. So, I assumed it was safe to use travel to work for a meeting and set up my classroom for the start of the new school year. On my way home from school, the issue happened again. I immediately contacted the dealership and was able to get the car to them. They started running diagnostic tests and currently have the vehicle on hand. However, I don't really feel safe now with this car given the circumstances. What if this should happen again? What if this happens to me or someone else who is traveling on a busy highway and it causes injury or even death to an accident. The engine light came on, battery light flickered on and off, the car shook, the car's HEV system warning was going off, etc. Plea

I have noticed this only happens on very cold days and it has Happened 7 times now. The car will be driving along and suddenly lose all power to the point you cannot accelerate above 15 MPH even if you floor the gas pedal. While this happens the Battery indicator will drop to 0 and then a Message Check Hybrid System pops up. Once the car comes to a complete stop the parking brake will automatically engage and will not release. If you shut the car off and turn it back on, A message please wait while battery charges is on the display and will not disengage the parking brake until the battery charges up to about 35-40% . The dealer has looked at the car 4 times and found nothing as no codes ever registered. I even opened a case direct with Hyundai Consumer affairs and they can not seem to find anything wrong with the car nor do they think it is an Issue. I find this to be extremely unsafe for a vehicle to randomly lose power and refuse to come out of park regardless of where on the road you happen to be when this occurs. It has not happened since the temperatures have been above freezing, but with winter a few months away. I completely fear for my safety.

I turned right into my driveway at a slow speed. As I went onto the driveway, the car surged forward. To avoid driving into the garage door, I turned to the left to drive along the side of my house thinking I would be able to stop it. I kept hitting the break but the car kept going. When the vehicle did not stop, I steered to the right because I thought it could be possible that my neighbor's dog could be in the adjacent yard (to the left of my house) The ground between the houses is pitched down (to the left) towards my house and I side-swiped the back half of the side of my house. Although applying the break, my car continued after sideswiping the side of my house with the front right side of my car and went into the house behind my house causing damage to that house. My car stopped when it went into the house behind my house.

Dealer did advised that it's a warranty issue. Other circumstances surrounding this issue: Issue 1 6 Weeks ago wife received email from Hyundai indicating vehicle was due for service. Wife took vehicle to dealer, she was turned away and advised that service was required. Issue 2 I phone Hyundai corporate from work where all calls are recorded. Phone system has beeping sound every 30 seconds. Hyundai rep was also advised verbally that calls were recorded. Into the phone call she asked if she was being recorded and I advised her yes. She said that their policy prohibits customers from recording their calls. I asked for copy of that policy that I never received. Issue 3 I then scheduled appointment with same dealership and took time off work. Arrived and was advised internet was down all day and they couldn't service vehicles. Was advised I would receive callback. 3 weeks and never received. Issue 4 Approx 6-8 weeks into this issue and revisited dealership. Within 40 minutes they advised me the vehicle was unsafe to drive. Summary It is believed that the vehicle may have been unsafe to drive for many weeks. Where service facility had opportunity to run diag scan, but never did.

5/17/23 took vehicle to Dick Smith Hyundai for navigation issue, after being asked to park in a different spot brakes failed and car crashed into one of the dealer cars. Since owning the car for over 14 months without any brake issue I thought maybe my foot slipped off the brake. When leaving the dealer I tried braking several times with no issue. 5/26/23 while parking the car at a restaurant the brakes failed me again and was obvious not a slip off the brake that caused the car to collide with a tree saving me and my wife from falling down a steep embankment. Severe damage to front of car. 5/27/23 Called Dick Smith Hyundai to ask about how to remedy an obvious safety issue with the brake, was told that they would not check it out until body repairs are made first and if the issue could be duplicated before Hyundai would be involved. There were no warnings of brake or other issues. This vehicle is UNSAFE to drive after body repairs are made it will have to be towed (at my expense) back to a Hyundai dealer. Police reports on both incidents, GEICO claim put in also. No other inspections at this time. this happened in Greeville SC which is our summer home,

I drive 2022 Hyundai Tucson hyrbrid limited. I have noticed a plastic cluttering noise coming from outside hood area on driver side. This noise is always there at highway speed only. Have already complained to dealership but they act like they are confused and can’t figure out where exactly noise is coming from. Like me many people have complained about this same cluttering problem which nobody has figured out where exactly it’s coming from. But the noise is loud and always there at highway speed. Only way to hide this noise is by playing loud music.

I bought a ‘22 Tucson Hybrid in Sept of ‘22. Upon delivery there were issues w paint & a dent on the rear qtr panel. The bigger issue however, is disconnect in communication between the EV motor, gas engine & transmission. All work is done @dealership and well maintained. History of EV over 8 months: @1000 miles noise under vehicle began. Dealership inspected, all checked out. The dealership has done all servicing as scheduled. From 1000 to 12,000 miles, the vehicle drove best if in sport mode. Sport mode utilizes the gas engine and not EV. When in EV modes, the vehicle runs high rpms or it’s sluggish. It’s never consistent. In some instances; the vehicle will actually stall for 2-3 seconds and kick back on. 1 instance was at a stop light, turning left. Mid turn, gas to the floor, the vehicle stalled for 3 seconds before responding. I was almost hit at 50 mph in the intersection as both motors failed me. The next day, 3 lights came on: An EV, check engine and Hybrid motor light came on, 3 total. My Hyundai app stated: issue communicating EV and Gas motor, EMS communication error. This cleared itself in 36 hrs but I couldn’t drive it safely for a week. I took it to the dealership, everything checked out. 3 days ago @ 17,400 miles, I received a text: Hyundai stated car unfit to drive. DTC code U062300, U111200, U02BB0:Powertrain EMS issue. The techs had it 2 days, fixed it. 3 blocks from dealer, check engine light came on again. I returned it to dealer. I’ve found 32 accounts o

The trailer towing guidance in the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid owner’s manual is incorrect and would put the driver in a dangerous situation if followed. There are at least two key errors: - Page 6-68 states, “The trailer tongue should weigh a maximum of 10% of the total loaded trailer weight . . .” This is incorrect. For stability, the trailer tongue weight should be a minimum of 10% of the total loaded trailer weight. - The table on page 6-69 lists the maximum trailer weight when equipped with a braking system as 3,500 pounds. However, the table also gives that the maximum tongue weight as 220 pounds. That equates to a 6.3% tongue weight. I contacted Hyundai to ask for clarification (see attached email). They told me that “Towing capacity is based on engine power and other such concerns. Tongue weight is determined by the material strength of the hitch, anchor points, etc. and therefore the two will not necessarily coincide.” I then asked them what the tongue weight limitation was based on and they said they did not know. The owner’s manual is over 11 Mb, so I have only to two pages of concern.

On at least six occasions since I took possession of this Hyundai vehicle the vehicle has been automatically slowed down accompanied by a "25 mph speed limit" sensor light coming on - and most of these instances could be dangerous because they were not in low-speed zones. This has happened in low-speed zones or near those, in particular on/near a college campus that I drive through or near, but several times this happened when I was in a 35, 45, or 55 mph zone. In fact, yesterday around 6 p.m., after starting the car a minute earlier I pulled out of a driveway onto a rural highway (55 mph) and the car slowed immediately and that warning came on and it did not go off until I shut the car off about 5 minutes later. This was nowhere near a low-speed zone, it was several miles from one. When this has happened in higher speed zones the only thing that makes sense sometimes is to try and "override" the setting by putting the accelerator to the floor, but that isn't ideal as I have discovered, because while it will eventually override the sensor it also causes the car to rocket once it does. Besides that, the car can be shut down and that seems to reset the sensor as well, but sometimes you can't just pull over and restart.

Within only two weeks of purchase this new car would suddenly stall in the middle of the road. The computer tells you to pull over. We continued to try and get the dealer to fix this issue, they first ignored us, then they secondly tried and successfully replicated the issue. They said there is no way they can fix the issue. This dangerous stalling in the middle of the road happened numerous times. You will push the pedal all the way to the ground and it won’t go over 20mph. This is a very dangerous issue and these vehicles need to stop being sold. It is very dangerous. We have been left without our money back and without a car to drive for months. We cannot drive the Tucson as it is simply too dangerous and must be towed to go anywhere for salvage.

Told me would need to get approval from hyundai to fix the issue. Two days later hyundai refused to fix problem said there was water in the oil pan. Then accused me of driving the vehicle through high water to which I never have and told them so, but they refused to find out how water is getting into the oil pan. When driving my car at any speed it will suddenly begin to get sluggish then it becomes unresponsive to me giving it gas and starts to decelerate. When this happens suddenly warning signs on the vehicle go off stating to check the hybrid system and stop the vehicle. When this happens the car then stops functioning. I never know when it is gonna happen. I have been in the middle of heavy traffic and at high speeds stuck in the middle of the road. I have brought it in now four times to different dealerships and contacted corporate and No one can find a problem. I have pictures of the warning signs going off, all I am being told is we don’t find anything wrong when they run their test or try to reproduce the issue, so they can’t help me. During the day, even in bright sunlight, the headlights are on because the auto headlight sensor is faulty. This causes the LED display for the climate control to be unreadable as it “thinks” it is night and defaults to a very dim display setting. This is a safety concern since you can’t see what temperature, what fan setting or what mode the climate control is on. You end up needing to take your eyes off the road and moving your head around to try and see the very dim display. This ONLY happens to the climate control display. The main driving gauge display and infotainment display are fine. In speaking with the Hyundai dealer, they tested several other Tucson‘s and all have the same problem. So there is an issue with the auto headlight sensor turning on the headlights and dimming the climate control display when it should not. I have a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SEL Convenience.

The vehicle is currently at the dealership. I purchased the 2022 hyundai Tucson hybrid limited in April. Have gotten my oil changes done religiously at the dealership. Vehicle is at 22k miles. And had oil change 5 days prior to incident. I was on the way to work and vehicle started to struggle to accelerate, engine began malfunctioning. Vehicle dropped drastically from 80mph Dow to 25-30 mph in short period of time, would have been rear ended if not in right lane already. No warning or previous problems. No warning or check engine lights EVER came on before the vehicle would not drive at all. And was told by the vehicle to “check hybrid system stop safely”. Called roadside and vehicle was towed to dealership. They diagnosed as “the timing chain was ‘missing’ one of the cylinders, causing a loss of power from the gasoline engine and the hybrid system attempted to compensate for lost power, resulting in engine failure” later that day when I arrived from work to get a loaner I was told that it was a broken camshaft and warranty would pay for a new engine.”

The headlights on the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Ltd are a road safety hazard. The dealer says they are not aware of the issue, which makes no sense all you have to do is google it and see others with the same issue. Turning on the headlights creates a dark shadow. I have to drive with my brights on when turning, and most of the time at night. The bottom shadow moves with every movement. You can see the triangles on the road, and again when turning you lose light. If I would have driven this vehicle at night, I would not have purchased it. I am an active-duty service member who purchased a new 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid on 16 October 2021. The car occasionally makes a strange humming noise while the vehicle is completely turned off. I recorded my car making this strange noise, and the video recording can be seen at https://youtu.be/bY8GJenoWBQ. I had previously notified Hyundai Maintenance of this during a scheduled vehicle check; nothing was done to resolve this matter. The advertised fuel economy on this car is 36/37/37 (city/combined/highway) Miles per Gallon. I am currently getting 28 MPG (see attachment), which is approximately 30% below the advertised fuel economy. Since I purchased this vehicle, it has consistently delivered a poor fuel economy well below the advertised fuel economy. After trying to resolve the poor fuel economy issue with Hyundai for 9 months (see attachment), I reached out to the Better Business Bureau seeking a resolution. On 17 November 2022, I was notified by the Better Business Bureau that Hyundai rejected my proposed resolutions of Hyundai repairing the car under manufacturer warranty or replace it if unable to fix the poor fuel economy, as well as reimburse me for money spent due to excessive fuel consumption. Additionally, other persons have reported their Hyundai cars delivering a fuel economy much lower than advertised (visit https://www.reddit.com/r/Hyundai/comments/nwayqv/2022_tucson_hybrid_poor_gas_mileage/). The first time we reported it while getting an oil change, they wouldn't do anything about it because they said they couldn't reproduce it. There were no warning lamps or messages about the problem and it is getting worse. It used to only do it when you use intermittent mode, but now it does it all the time, regardless of mode. Our concern is that they will stop working altogether. Once it was reproduced, they had to order parts and cannot give us a timeline for when they will have the parts. The panoramic sunroof failed, shattering without any apparent impact while I was going 70mph on the interstate. Glass went everywhere. I was not near any other vehicles and the glass shattered outwards (this, according to Hyundai, is a hallmark trait of the sunroof failing without external cause -- note that they've previously had a recall for the same panoramic sunroof issue in another model car). My safety, and the safety of others, was put at risk due to the "exploding" glass, the speed at which the incident occurred, and the shock it caused me (the driver) while driving on the interstate. The problem has been confirmed by the Hyundai dealership that I bought the car from. They said they've had to repair multiple Hyundai vehicles with failing panoramic sunroofs at that dealership alone (apparently, this issue is most common in the Santa Fe model). Hyundai is covering the replacement and repair of the sunroof under the car's warranty. They stated that panoramic roofs "explode" due to pressure issues. After they told all this to me, they stated that they "think" something hit my roof, and sent me a picture of chipped glass behind the giant hole on my car's roof. Even if the sunroof failed because something hit it, it should not shatter in the way that it did (as the person driving the car at the time of the incident, there was nothing that hit the car).

My vehicle that I finance is a 2022 Hybrid Tucson it failed at 14,596 miles I had it since November 2021 so for a good 9 months until it decided to finally malfunction. As I been driving it previously for the past month I’ve been hearing the transmission struggle a lot more everyday that I use it. I also noticed that the engine really lacks power, when I accelerate it takes a really long time for the gears to shift which has been getting worse for the past month now. Which is what I believe led up to my vehicle losing complete engine power while I was driving 30mph. I saw on my digital cluster a message saying “Check Hybrid System, Stop the car safely.” In an orange triangle, I had cars backed up close to me and I was confused as to why this was happening to my not even a year old vehicle. This is a major safety issue to me that while I’m driving anywhere my engine will go completely off and I am only to rely on 20mph on EV Mode. If I was on the freeway I could’ve gotten into an accident and with my whole family in the car. I personally feel unsafe driving, it’s my daily driver and my only way to get to work.

I am writing this letter to formally file a complaint regarding the defective sunroof on my brand-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson Limited Edition. I am a medical frontliner and I purchased my car on July 20, 2022. Eleven (11) days after I brought the car home, the sunroof spontaneously exploded, creating a huge crack that spanned the entire width of the car. In addition to that crack, I could see small fissures in the entire back panel of the sunroof. I am grateful that I was not in the car when this happened. It was only upon stopping at a restaurant that one of my passengers, who is tall enough to see the roof of the car, noticed the damage. Upon noticing the crack, I drove the car immediately to the dealership, where I was told that they found a small dent in the roof, which indicated a point of impact. The dealership manager then told me in no uncertain terms that because of this technicality, it was my fault and that there was nothing they could do to help me. In the 11 days that I have had the car, I have not parked under any trees, nor heard any noise that would have indicated an impact of any kind. Furthermore, the supposed point of impact was hairline and we don't understand how that could result in the entire back frame had a two-inch gap crack which runs the entire width of the back roof. I was really looking forward to driving my new Hyundai hybrid. I paid the deposit and waited approximately two months to get my vehicle, and after just 11 days, this happened. I thought t

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
