Car was breaking hard because of Active Assist despite that no car was in front. It was breaking consistently until I finally was able to disable the Active Assist. Luckily, there was traffic and driving at less than 20mph but this also happened some time last year at the same area where there was no traffic and was going at a minimum speed of 45mph and to have the Active Assist break hard put me at great risk of getting rear ended. I have footage from the dash cam which I unfortunately cannot attach as it's more than the 10MB limit.
2023 Hyundai Elantra complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2023 record →
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. During the failure the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the cause of the failure was due to faulty motor mount bushings. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 290.
On July 28th 2024, I took my new 2023 Hyundai Elantra to its first oil change at a Take 5 oil change center. They replaced the oil, filter, checked the fluid levels in my car, and topped the fluids off. That evening, I noticed there was a liquid leaking from behind the passenger side tire, and at first thought it was water from the A/C, but in the morning, I noticed a puddle of liquid was under the car. I went back to Take 5 on August 5th and informed them that I believed there was coolant leaking from the vehicle following my oil change. The worker checked and said my coolant reservoir was completely empty, and he refilled the coolant and told me to take it to be diagnosed at a full service auto center. On August 13th I noticed there was a smell of burning metal coming from the engine bay when I turned the car on and took it to a Firestone where they informed me that the radiator cap had failed and was no longer holding the pressure in the radiator, and that almost all the coolant had leaked from my car. I had the radiator cap replaced and kept the original to take to the Hyundai dealership to see if this was a manufacturers defect or the result of improper handling by the Take 5 worker.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra equipped with Kumho Tires, Tire Line: Solus, Tire Size: 205/55/R16, DOT Number: 1K2LMYAY. The contact stated that when his daughter started the vehicle in the driveway, she felt that the vehicle was riding low on the driver's front tire side. The contact stated that he and his daughter observed a blister on the tire sidewall that had burst. The contact stated that the tire was flat. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or tire repair shop. The tire was not inspected and was not replaced. The contact stated that the failure was the third Kumho Solus 205/55/R16 that had developed blisters on the sidewall and failed. The approximate vehicle failure mileage was 20,000 and the tire failure mileage was 3,500.
The contact owned a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while the contact's daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the lane assist was activated, however, the vehicle independently steered to the right. The contact stated that the failure occurred on a two-lane road. The contact stated that due to the failure, the vehicle crashed into a ditch, where there was a concrete covert where the vehicle came to a stop in an open ditch. The contact stated that the transmission and other unknown parts were detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The vehicle was deemed a total loss. The contact stated that the vehicle had been taken to the dealer previously because of failure and an unknown sensor had been replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. In addition, the contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline and report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,305.
While driving at the freeway, the car engine failed. Car alarms went off and digital dashboard show alert of the engine failure. Battery and all other symbols in the dashboard lighted up as well. The vehicle lost speed. Dashboard displayed text indicating to shift gear to neutral and to press the start engine button. Engine restarted after following directions.
Car applies emergency brakes when another vehicle passes close by at higher speed from behind in adjacent lane when the blind spot collision feature in my car is set to "Active Assist". As per the owner’s manual page number 7-46 to 7-52, the collision assist is designed to operate when turn signal is turned on in the direction of detected vehicle. Also, it is mentioned that the audible warning will sound. In actual scenario car is applying breaks even when turn signal is off, driving straight, no lane change. Also, there is no audible warning sound when car applies automatic brake. Owner’s manuals write up is not matching with the issue I observed, and this is very serious safety issue.
Multiple times driving on highway at posted speed limit and vehicle displays emergency braking system and just comes to complete stop on highway with oncoming cars going 65mph. Has happened 3 times before.
My 2023 Hyundai Elantra has started alerting me while driving that I was going the wrong way down a road. The alert goes something like: WARNING Entering into wrong way detected. This occurs when I'm driving the correct direction. I've Googled the issue and other Hyundai owners have documented receiving the same message. I believe this is dangerous if one is driving someplace unfamiliar and receives this message. It has the potential to alarm a driver into making a U turn and traveling into oncoming traffic.
Hi horn and low horn stopped working after 1 1/2 years of driving and only 7000 miles. This is a safety recall because it will fail West Virginia state inspection without the horn working. Also, it puts myself at risk while driving because I can't alert oncoming traffic if they are heading towards me. This could cause an accident. Hyundai Service Center will be inspecting the issue on 05/07/24.
While driving in a straight line my brakes and brake pedal were activated without any pressure being applied and maintaining about 45 mph. I pulled over to check the car and see if there was anything stuck in the wheel well and saw nothing. I got back in my car and proceeded to drive 2 blocks where i then went to park and upon turning left to pull into a parking spot my car immediately stopped and indicated that the emergency brake had been activated. I had not touched the brakes or the hand brake whatsoever and using the handbrake to turn on and off the emergency brake did not fix this i had to just wait until it was released. Upon researching this other drivers of the same model and year have experienced this problem in more dangerous situations on the freeways and at high speeds. I believe the problem has to do with the emergency brake being activated due to an electrical problem.
The contact owned a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, another vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign; as a result, the contact's vehicle was struck by the driver's side door, sending the vehicle careening 50 feet before coming to a complete stop. Only the steering wheel air bag was deployed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A police report was filed, with injuries reported. The contact was transported to an area hospital by EMS and treated for a concussion and non-descript injuries to her shoulders and back. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 31,000.
Small crack in windshield caused by a twig less than 4 inches long with a diameter smaller than the width of. Finger. Another small crack in windshield. Do not know how it occurred Contacted local windshield repair business and was advised, per manufacturer they only replace the windshield. Looked online and see that the windshield issue is a known defect. I have an elderly father that lives in North Carolina and I’m gonna have to replace my glass because I don’t want another twig to fall in and burst out my entire windshield when I’m driving down the highway
On my new car my backup camera has gone out in less than 7000 miles, and from what i have seen is a known defect that the Hyundai line of vehicles have and i want to make it more know of the defunct camera they are selling.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving 55 MPH and above, the RPM fluctuated, and the engine revved loudly. The transmission then seized in 5th gear, and the vehicle lost motive power. No warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the failure recurred while driving at 65–70 MPH with the cruise control activated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer; however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The failure persisted, and the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound while the transmission was shifted into park (P). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,600.
My car has 11000 miles. 6 times I have had the emergency braking come on when there have been no cars close to me (4 times by 3500 miles and twice from 3500-11000). One time no other cars even in sight. I have been on the freeway and on side streets, so from 20 mph to 65-70 mph. It is startling and I'm afraid will cause me to get rear ended as it's instinctive to step on brake when this happens. I mentioned this to the dealer I purchased it from at my 3500 and 11000 mile oil changes and they said they couldn't reproduce it and everything was fine. It's only happened 6 times in 11000 miles so it is unlikely the dealer will be able to reproduce. But especially going freeway speeds it is not safe to slam on breaks for no reason and I am afraid of getting rear ended. I was looking online to see if this problem had been reported and someone with the same issue was recommended to report it to this site, so I am doing the same. Thank you.
The vehicle's horn has completely stop working as of [XXX]. I took the vehicle to a toyota dealership because the Hyundai dealerships did not have any available appointments at the time. The Toyota dealership in Ardmore looked at the vehicle to see if there were any issues with fuses and wires. They were unable to find any issues. The dealership recommended I contact Hyundai. I then arranged for an appointment from Hyundai. Several days before the appointment, I was contacted by Conicelli Hyundai. They told me they are not taking any new bookings. I put a bad review on Conicelli's google review. I received a message from Conicelli's customer service department askimg me to call back. I called them back and was told that the service manager will call me back. The service manager called back and I explained that the horn is not working. The service manager told me that they just replaced a horn on someone elses car. He also related that the item is on back order. When I did some google searches for horn issues, I began to see that this is a national problem with their horn failures on various vehicles among different years. I have not driven the car since the horn failure. I believe the horn is on back order because Hyundai is having so many problems with their horn. My vehicle usually would turn on the warning light stating that the engine oil level is low when I accelerate. The last time I had an oil change, it would turn on when I accelerate my vehicle to merge on the highway. I have had my engine oil level sensor changed out in my vehicle by a Hyundai tech. Immediately after my sensor was changed and I merged on to the nearest highway, it went on again when I increased speed. My vehicle has been inspected by a Hyundai dealer but it could not be fixed. This does not happen when you are at a consistent speed but rather when the car needs to accelerate.
So far since owning this vehicle. I have gone through 7 OEM windshields. I had a 2010 Ford Focus, replaced it with the 2023 Elantra. In 13 years driving the same roads, and only replaced 5 windshields. The windshield thickness needs to be looked into, or what they are made of. Very small rocks are causing the damage, however, what would happen if a much larger rock hit the windshield?
I purchased the vehicle February 6-23 and in April of 2023 my engine light keeps coming on saying low engine oil. I called the Tampa Hyundai dealership and they told me to ignore it I have down 2 service on this vehicle and issue is not fixed on the second service the same day I let the parking lot the issue started again. I bring the car back and they stated it was fix. Car was serviced 01/06/24 and recheck 01/09/24 and today is 01/12/24 and the issue is happing again. So I need help to understand this car issue
My vehicle was involved in a auto accident. A chain reaction of multiple cars was hit I was rear ended by a Subaru Outback and was push into a box commercial truck my vehicle was deemed total and I sustain serious injuries my front in was smash in and no airbags deployed I contacted National consumer affairs my case number [XXX]. My case manger Elijah was very unprofessional and did not help and suggested I have an attorney reach out. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
My headlights severely fog up during night driving or during rain, damp weather, or after any contact with water. This is an extremely common problem with 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra (all trim levels) and causes extreme low visibility at night. Another issue is the horn which is also extremely common on 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra (all trim levels) and mine has gone out completely twice and been replaced twice. My headlights have been inspected with the issue replicated and was told that it will not require any work because it’s “normal to have fog inside headlights” and no warranty work will be done to fix this safety issue
On Saturday December 16th my vehicle was parked as I was shopping. When I returned to the vehicle and started it, lights began to light up on the dashboard. They included the rear collision, front collision, airbag, parking brake, battery, tires, blind spot, and others. I called Hyundai and they said that they did not receive any communication from the vehicle stating that there was a problem. The front and rear cameras stopped working and I could no longer tell if my turning signals were operational as I didn't hear the normal clicking sound. It was difficult to turn as the steering wheel was tight. When I first went to the dealership, they refused to take a look at the problem. After filing a complaint with Hyundai, I was finally able to take the vehicle in on yesterday. They also are confused because the initial test showed that there was no problem. They now have the vehicle and are trying to find the cause. This is very concerning because in addition to basically driving blind, according to the manufacturer book, continuing to drive with specific light on could cause engine problems. I also was no longer aware of the speed that the vehicle was traveling nor how much going. The dealership says that it will be several days before they can get to the cause. There was no warning prior to all of the lights coming on and the vehicle has not been involved in any accidents.
The horn constantly fails and needs to be replaced. This is not only an issue with the Elantra, as I've seen it as a common issue among a range of Hyundai vehicles. Even my local dealership has many horns on hand, as it is so common for them to be replaced, as they stated. I've gone through 2 horns in less than a year. This is complete negligence on Hyundai's part, as the horn is a critical safety feature of any highway vehicle. They replace it knowing it's going to fail, completely disregarding the safety of both the operator and nearby car and foot traffic.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving in the rain, the vehicle experienced severe hydroplaning while driving slowly over standing water. The contact lost control of the vehicle and nearly caused a crash. The vehicle was not yet taken to the dealer to be inspected or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.
Horn stopped working
On two occasion vehicle abruptly shuts down leaving me with no control of vehicle. 1st incident , i was turning corner when car made a loud screeching noise and completely shut down ,i had no control over breaks or steering. Car sat for several hours before i could start it up, i did attempt to drive it down the street. I called to have vehicle looked at by dealership. They were unable to duplicate what happened . I received car back drove it for 2 weeks and then same thing happened, this time I was on a busy road when it shut down making loud screeching noise . I let vehicle roll while i struggled to pull over . I had no control over vehicle something is triggering vehicle to shut down . I am very concerned this will continue happening and it could result in a serious injury or fatality . Dealership as of today has no resolution to this problem , they still have my vehicle in their shop .
The car was involved in an accident. It was going 5-10 mph and hit a light post. There was minor body damage and about 10-15 seconds after initial impact the airbags deployed and cracked my windshield. The car was considered a total loss.
I have contacted the dealer. I am almost ready to get a lawyer. This is the 4th lemon I’ve been sold. Seat belt is installed wrong. Software updates are available and screaming at me but the dealership Will not call Me back. Two days now. Hyundai finance has treated me Disrespectfully. I have error messages when I enter the car. The hood looks aftermarket and about to pop up. The NHtsa website says this car has recalls but not mine?? What ?? It smells like something is burning from the console. The brake collision is calibrated off. I would have a wreck. It’s not safe. Period.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V526000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the middle console became extremely hot, and the contact was unable to touch the console or the contents for fear of being burned. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that heat from the exhaust was permeating into the interior of the vehicle. The contact was informed that a heatshield sleeve needed to be added to the exhaust. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 8,000.
When I try to accelerate its like it isn't getting gas or there's something preventing it from going. Once it stops struggling it takes off all at once. When it struggles you can feel the vehicle hesitate. It has less Than 5000 miles on it. There shouldn't be a single problem with jt n⁵.
The right back and front windows on this car does not work. There are times when all 4 windows do not work and all 4 doors will lock up and cannot be open from inside nor outside. This is a huge safety hazard. I took the car back to the dealer a total of 6 times. They worked on the car 4 of those six times trying to fix the issue which still exist. They finally told me there is nothing more they can do at this point. I said ok then, so it's clear the car is a lemon, so I would like a manufacturers buy back. They have ignored me. This has been going on since March 5th of this year. I took the car to another dealer for a second opinion and was advised the car is a lemon so I should contact corporate. I was provided the contact information for corporate and so I called and made a complaint. Corporate advised they would have reached back out on June 14th of this year, and to this day I have hear nothing back. I am extremely terrified of driving this car because, what is there is a fire or something, and I can't get out of the car? This car is a real safety issue and all I have gotten from the dealer is disrespect over and over and over. At one point I went back to them letting know again I do not want the car and u was asked by one of their sales person if this is about money. How insensitive. I am paying for a car that I can't even drive. I have parked this car since June 25th of this year and have to now be relying on uber or begging persons a ride. Most time it's very inconven
My 2023 Hyundai Elantra vehicle displays a low oil pressure message when accelerating. Is this related to the recent recall for the electric oil pump assembly that may overheat and increase the risk of a fire?
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the rear cross track warning light was illuminated, and applied the brakes independently, causing the vehicle to independently steer to the right. The contact was able to regain control of the vehicle and continued driving. The contact stated he had experienced the failure a total of 5 times. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated he continued to experience the failure. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer and to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.
On July 28th I had an accident and hurt myself because seatbelt did not work
3 lanes going down to 2 (leftmost closed). I move over to far right lane out of middle lane. No cars ahead of me in right lane. some cars in left lane. In lane for about 100 yards when.... Emergency collision warning appears and warning is made with sound and car pumps to brakes. Nobody was in my lane within 40 yards. Nobody moving into my lane. I have had it slow down and give collision warning when a car moves to right turn lane from right lane and I pass that car. But this time the alert went off and brakes were automatically strongly applied as if I was about to plow into another car without any obvious threat. Dealer checked alerts and no obvious system failures or codes appeared. Turned off automatic braking for now (and as a safety concern, it resets to the default safety braking each time In restart the car). 8:41 AM 7/18/2023
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the reflection from the dashboard caused a glare on the front windshield, obstructing her vision while driving. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 3.
On [XXX], I was driving to a hair appointment and was getting over to the far right lane. Traffic was stop and go and as I merged into the far right lane, the car flashed an “engine off” red light warning and had the words “put in N.” I quickly realized that the car had died on me. I tried to press on the gas to get over to the emergency lane, but the car would not accelerate. I tried to push the button to restart it, and it would not restart. I then tried to put it in neutral as I thought that’s what the N letter meant and still nothing happened. With the car dead, I steered the car into the emergency lane with my hazard lights on. I then pressed on the brakes, tried to put in neutral and finally put the car in park (I believe. I don’t really remember the order of events because I was panicking). I then pushed the button to start the car and it started up. I then drove in the slow lane the rest of the way until I got to my appointment, as I was worried the car would die out on me again on the fast lane and be killed. Our car has been at Stockton Hyundai since [XXX], and we still don’t have my car back. The car is in my husband’s name, [XXX]. They are claiming they can’t find anything wrong with it. There is a case number with corporate, but yet I can’t reach anybody there. I’ve talked to Tracy Hyundai, Stockton Hyundai, Corporate Hyundai, and still no car. What can I do to resolve this issue? We are paying on a car that is not in our possession. I leave messages at Stockton
As I started driving my Hyundai Elantra, the digital dash and infotainment screen went black and then I got a message that my Hyundai BlueLink Profile along with its settings had been reset. I did not initiate this reset. I never heard anything from the manufacturer about this incident either. This momentarily caused me to lose sight of my speedometer and it reset all my ADAS settings such as following distances, warnings vs active assists, etc.
Had a crack on the windshield which was getting larger quickly. There was no damage caused by debris that I was aware of. Spoke to multiple dealerships and they refused to fix or even check if it was a defect. Went through insurance to get the windshield replaced but Safelite said that it was not a damage but most definitely a defective windshield.
I purchased a car on December 24th 2022 and from the day I left off the lot there were electrical signals showing that the car was malfunctioning. I told [XXX] (the dealer) what was taking place and the dealership never called me or tried to assist with any problems. For months the signals were coming on and off and my last straw was when my windshield wipers stopped working in the middle of a rain storm after I had just made an in person complaint for the 3rd time about my electrical issues on the car while at the dealership on May 13th 2023. I had just been told there was nothing they could do and I called them upon leaving to tell them I could not see while driving because my wipers were not working. They told me to just go home. [XXX] (New car sales manager) hung up on me 5/17/2023 after telling me I am making assumptions when I was shown proof that the car had issues by the service department when they finally serviced my car about my complaints on 5/16/2023. He told me he was never made aware when I emailed the service manager all of my proof the day prior. I called 5 times before I could actually reach [XXX] who would have been [XXX] supervisor. They even hung up on me prior to speaking to him. I am completely disgusted & I do not feel safe in this car. [XXX] did not want to give me anything in writing that he was saying over the phone. He would not even send me an email. I don't feel valued I feel used. At this point I don't even know or have faith in this company. I

1. Emergency Braking System - came on screen in car - and car took control and began to break 2. I was terrified on two separate occasions because I had no control over my car.... The first situation was when I was on the highway in the slow lane driving approximately 65-70 mph with no one in front of me - suddenly as the car behind me exited off the highway and merged into the off-ramp - my car suddenly began to brake on its own - for absolutely no reason - and then a few seconds later I had control of my car again. The second situation was when I was on a city street in the fast lane (a 4 lane road (2 lanes on each side of the street with a middle verge for people to turn left). I was going approximately 45 mph with no one in front me but there was a car to the right of me (in the slow lane). As I came up to a truck that was stopped in the middle verge lane (waiting to turn left) - my car once again suddenly began to brake - for absolutely no reason - and then a few seconds later I had control of my car again. 3. I took it to the dealership - they informed me there is nothing wrong with my car because they could not duplicate the problem. 4. I do not believe it has been inspected by the manufacturer - I told the dealership they can keep my car for as long as they need to and find out what is going on because the car is dangerous since it is taking on a life of its own. I am not pleased after reading through everything on the internet that apparently this is not an uncommon

Additionally, the instrument panel lights were becoming dim, preventing the contact to monitor the instrument cluster. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who gathered the vehicle data and sent a report to the manufacturer. The manufacturer then informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage 500.
I was driving on the turnpike and the truck in front of me was carrying material that caused my windshield to be soiled. I tried to clean but water did not come out of windshield wiper. I had to exit and clean manually. I was surprised no water because the car has only 2,700 miles and is 5 months old. I tried to fill with water but water dripped out. Next day I took to Hyundai dealer who told me rodents ate the hose. They charged me $252.43 to replace hose. I read online many claims against Hyundai for using soy based products in the engine components that attract rodents. I learned that two of my friends who own Hyundai's had similar problems with rodents eating wires and hoses. If it was at night when my windshield was compromised I could have had an accident. Hyundai has turned a defect into a moneymaker. Shame on them! Please help.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
