2015 Haul Master Utility Trailer

Defect. Harbor Freight Tools (Harbor Freight) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Haul Master Heavy Duty Folding Trailers, Utility Trailers, Super Duty Trailers, Tag-Along Trailers, and Folding Utility Trailers. The tires on these trailers may not be strong enough to support the expected loads. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 119, "New Pneumatic Tires-Other than Passenger Cars."

Risk. If the tires cannot meet the strength requirements, the tires may fail, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Harbor Freight will notify owners, and stores will provide replacement tires mounted on rims, free of charge. The recall began on December 5, 2017. Owners may contact Harbor Freight customer service at 1-800-444-3353.

The contact owns a 2015 Haul Master Utility 3000 Trailer. The contact stated that while hauling the trailer with an unstated vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed, while the trailer was empty, and the suspension was jumping and bouncing. The wheels and axle were grabbing, seizing, and unlocking the brakes. The vehicle lunged forward. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ABS brakes, drums, air bags, brake chambers, hanger bushings, and brake shoes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.

THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V638000 (TIRES); HOWEVER, THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT WENT TO HARBOR FREIGHT IN CAMARILLO, CA WHERE THEY OFFERED HIM SMALLER TIRES THAN THE ORIGINAL. A CASE NUMBER WAS NOT PROVIDED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
