Initially was receiving intermittent “Recieved Propulsion Power” warning and no check engine light. Did it about every 2 weeks but became worse. Received Reduced Propulsion power warning on a road trip from East TN to Charlotte then showed a check engine light. I continued to Charlotte I had 4 miles left on battery and was running on gas engine when “Engine Not Available” warning came on leaving me with a nearly dead battery for propulsion. Fortunately, there was a very nearby GM dealership in Charlotte which I was able to drop off and flew out of town for the week. I was told by the dealership that it was an O2 sensor and they had replaced it. Picked up the car the next week. I began the 3 hour trip back to East TN and about 30 miles into the trip I received the Reduced Propulsion Power AND Engine Not Available. I had about 10 miles left on the battery so I stopped and stayed at a hotel with a car charger overnight. Resumed trip home that am, but same code was displayed and engine would not come on. Rented a uhaul w/trailer and towed it home. Dropped it off at Champion Chevrolet in Johnson City and they diagnosed it as a faulty EGR valve. I learned that the part has been back ordered and looking at web forums I see people have described the same problem and they have been waiting many months for an EGR to be available. So, nature of complaint is: I got lucky in that I did not get stranded. Fortunately I was in the right place at the right time. I could have easily totally lo

On Dec 3, 2023 I got the message "Propulsion Power is Reduced" and the gas engine started even though there was about 53 miles left in the battery. I was able to continue on to my destination use the gas engine. On Dec 8, 2023 I drove the car to La Quinta Chevrolet and they diagnosed the problem as a failed BECM (Battery Energy Control Module). On Dec 11 I got the car back and was told the BECM is on backorder and there is no estimated delivery date. Also on 12/3 when I tried to start the car after getting it home I started getting the message "Shift to Park" The dealer was able to fix this before I got it back on 12/11. I've been told I don't qualify for a loaner vehicle so I am left with a car that could stop at any time.
In June of 2023 the car experienced propulsion power reduction. The car was at the dealer awaiting repair for 3 weeks. On Dec. 14,2023 the same thing happened again. The car was also unable to accelerate once mobile. The car has about 90k miles on it.
Vehicle is 2018 Chevrolet volt with approx 91000 miles, purchased new in California with both PZEV and Voltec warranties in place. Vehicle produced MIL in December, in Colorado, with exterior temperatures ~30 degrees, after attempting to remote start. The resulting OnStar Codes P1AEE, P1AEF, and P0AC4 indicating "the electric propulsion system is not performing as expected. Please service immediately." Drove the vehicle to the nearest dealership assuming there could be an unexpected loss of power. Identified PIC6285B as trouble shooting aid for the dealership. The dealership stated they contacted their GM TAC representative and the service foreman and TAC agreed the vehicle needed a transmission flush. No indication that the work would be covered by the bulletin found. Customer contacted Chevrolet EV advisor and confirmed vehicle did not qualify for any warranty as the diagnostics indicated a category 4 issue associated with the bulletin but the repairs required were a transmission flush. This was contrary to the published bulletin, other customer reports, as well as the specific DTCs expected. Customer believes diagnostics would be covered by bulletin or warranty given a repair was identified based on the trouble codes that were pulled. Dealership and GM did not agree with customers belief. Customer forced to pay in order to recover vehicle after 1 week.
In August 2023, while driving on I-93 in Boston, car switched from Battery Mode to Engine Mode, and Driver Information Screen reported "Reduced Propulsion". Propulsion Battery charge and gasoline fuel levels were adequate such that this should not have happened. In this Reduced Propulsion state the environmental systems, i.e. Heat/Defrost/AC, become inoperative. A thunder storm overhead was pouring cold rainwater on the windshield and it became fogged inside from condensation. Because windshield Defrost was not functioning my passenger and I had no recourse but to frantically grab whatever we could to wipe away the condensation and keep some small amount of road visibility. This problem is intermittent. Car is available for inspection upon request. Reduced visibility in a moving vehicle is a safety hazard to the driver and all those in their vicinity. A dealer or service center has not been alerted. The vehicle has not been inspected for this problem. The intermittent problem of vehicle entering "Reduced Propulsion" Mode first occurred in July of 2023. I have an On Board Diagnostic (OBD) reader that always reports Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1E00 when the problem occurs.
Car died while driving down road. Has engine codes to service high voltage system although It showed a full battery it only had 1 mile range and the gas motor wouldn't run.
The Battery Energy Control Module needs to be replaced (BECM). The car is available to be inspected at Key Chevrolet in South Burlington, VT. The car was parked when it failed. The car wouldn't start (lights on the dashboard came on) and it wouldn't turn off. I got a "shift to park" error message, regardless of which gear I was in. The car wouldn't go into Drive to go forward with either the drive battery or the gas generator. I had the car was towed to the dealership. It was inspected and diagnosed by them. When they did the diagnosis, they said the BECM had failed and there were cells in the drive battery that needed to be replaced. The BECM failure is a common problem with Chevrolet Volts and is covered by the Voltec warranty. There were no warning lights or other warnings (e.g., reduced propulsion) whatsoever. The car had shut off like normal but would not start or turn completely off. I was fortunate to have had the BECM fail while the car was parked. My understanding is that BECMs can fail while the car is moving and the power will stop and you won't have any control.
The vehicle will lose power without warning on a regular basis. the vehicle will also accelerate unexpectedly when switching from battery to engine power at speeds under 50 mph. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer and have been informed there is nothing they can do for me, the vehicle does not have any faulty components.
My 2018 Cheverolet Volt stopped charging via the PHEV port, the check engine light came on, and "Propulsion Power Is Reduced" read on the driver display. Car acceleration began to lag and I called the dealership service department immediately. I took it to the service dept and they said the repair is under warranty but the part is back-ordered with no ETA on when I will get my car back, but I should keep it there to prevent from getting stranded. They will provide no loaner car. It is currently at the dealership and I have no transportation. This appears to be a BECM issue.
The vehicle failed to restart after being parked in a garage all day while at work. On board diagnostics returned multiple codes concerning the EV battery and vehicle integrated control module. Specific descriptions include: The Lithium-Ion Battery is not performing as expected. An issue has been detected in the Onboard Charging System which manages your vehicles battery pack charge level; Vehicle network communication code. The network provides a communications link between systems inside the vehicle and when the network is disrupted a code can be set. If vehicle functionality is impacted please seek service soon. Dealership indicates the Battery Module needs replacing and part is back-ordered with unknown delivery time. There had been no warning or other diagnostic codes visible prior to the failure.
Driving down interstate when the following error came up on the console: ACTION REQUIRED: SHIFT VEHICLE INTO PARK Coasted to a stop in the middle of a homeless encampment under the freeway. I was in fear of my life due to the failure of the vehicle. Vehicle taken to Rydell Chevrolet 18600 Devonshire St, Los Angeles, CA 91324. Told the Power Inverter Module had failed. Parts unavailable.
While Driving my 2018 Chevy Volt from Payson Utah to Provo Utah going north on the I-15 Freeway the car Lost Power and came to a stop. Luckily I was in the outside lane and was able to coast to a stop on the shoulder and wait for a tow truck to take the car to the nearest dealer in Spanish Fork Utah. My safety could have been seriously affected if I had remained stalled on the freeway. The car would no longer start or Turn off. The display only showed that the car should be shifted to park even though I had already completed that request. The car has been inspected by the Dealer for GM. No one else that I know of has inspected the car. No Previous warnings or messages appeared before the incident occured.. The Dealer is Telling me the car’s battery energy control module needs to be replaced and that it could take months to get a part. This is way to long for a car to wait to get repaired if the manufacturer claims to still be making the part.
The vehicle has a failure of the BECM and the EGR valve and cooler. Both parts are unavailable. I've been without my car for over a month. The service center cannot tell me when parts will be available.
BECM (Battery Energy Control Module) failed. Initially received check engine light, reduced propulsion power, and battery not available warnings but was able to drive via the internal combustion engine. Within 24 hours, car was completely dead in my driveway and would not drive at all on either propulsion system. Ended up having to have it towed to the dealership where the faulty BECM was diagnosed and replaced under warranty.
On 8/3/ 2023, my 2018 Chevrolet Volt lost propulsion power while I was camping in the Lassen National Forest near Susanville, CA. I was leaving my campsite when I was on the way to Bend, OR when the car lost power and went into limp mode. It was a two lane road on CA 36 without a shoulder, so I was stuck on a travel lane. I was able to turn the car off and on for a few seconds where I would reach a maximum speed of about 15 mph for about 5-10 seconds before the car would go into limp mode again. I did this for about 20 to 30 times until I reached an incline and the car did not have enough power to inch up the hill, so I had to push the car down the travel lane to the nearest open space I could find that would not block the travel lane. After walking two miles to get cell phone reception, I was able to contact AAA where then towed my vehicle two hours south to the nearest Chevrolet dealership in Reno, NV (Champion Chevrolet). I had to rent a car to continue my trip and eventually get back home. On 8/21/2023, I was contacted by Champion Chevrolet and was told that the issue was the issue was the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) and that was going to be covered under warranty. However, they noted that the BECM was on national backorder and that there was no ETA for when they would receive the part. Because of this, I had to extend my rental for the month at a cost of about $1,800 to be able to get home to Los Angeles. As I write this on 12/1/2023, I have still not received m
Upon attempting to start the car, displayed "Propulsion Power Is Reduced" error message and "Check Engine" light came on, and the car failed to start. Mission Bay Chevrolet on Morena Blvd in San Diego repaired the car by replacing the BECM. This repair was covered under the Voltec warranty, so I was not charged for it, but lost usage of the car for 18 days it was in the shop. November 8-26, 2021.
2018 Volt will not shut off. Shift to Park displayed on console. Problem has been diagnosed at dealer. Problem is under Service Bulletin 19-NA-206, Voltec (Electric and Hybrid Vehicle) Warranty. Dealer and GM refuses to repair. Problem has been occuring for several weeks.
The contact owns a 2018 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle sputtered and independently turned to the right. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road and became aware that the vehicle was smoking. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 80,200.
The car lost propulsion while driving on an on-ramp road onto an interstate, luckily the car was able to make it the shoulder. Vehicle slowed to below 40mph and intermittently down to 0mph when waiting and restarting vehicle. Able to finally get home in the emergency lane. VERY DANGEROUS and do not recommend! The check engine light was not on prior to this and it was taken to the dealership where it diagnosed as a faulty battery energy control module (BECM). The part is under warranty and awaiting replacement, but no spare parts are currently available. Internet review indicates an average of 3 months or 90-day until part received, serviced, installed, and repaired. Dealership without loaner car until November 22nd. Unacceptable customer service per previous GM rules to have a rental available and did not offer a rental service alternative upon drop off of the 2018 Volt.
My car is demonstrating a "shift to park" error when I put it in park, which means I cannot turn off the vehicle fully. I am concerned I will be stuck somewhere if this issue is not fixed. It appears to be a known problem at GM and they irregularly cover it under warranty. It should be a recall issue that is fixed for free because it is a problem.
A Shift to Park message displayed while the vehicle is in park. The car will not turn off and continues to run. The issue is well documented through GM/Chevrolet, as they have a service bulletin (19-NA-206) for it. That document specifically states that the Voltec Warranty covers this issue, but Chevrolet is refusing to service my car based on its VIN number, despite identifying it as the same issue. And for the last question, no lights initially came on but then the check engine light came back on. When the car was finally turned off at the dealership, it turned back on with no issue lights or messages.
Car is stopped and shifted into park. When ignition switch is hit to turn vehicle off display reads "shift to park." Car does not register that car is already in park and cannot turn car off.
The car lost propulsion while driving on the interstate, luckily the car was able to make it the shoulder. The check engine light was not on prior to this and it was taken to the dealership where it diagnosed as a faulty battery energy control module (BECM). The part is awaiting replacement, but no spare parts are currently available.
There is a lot of interior chrome, something I have complained to GMC about before. Today it caused me to be temporarily blinded by the reflection of the sun at multiple angles preventing me from seeing other vehicles. I had my 3 year old daughter in the car with me as I was nearly killed because I could not [XXX] see. If my daughter had been hurt I would have lost my [XXX] mind because I TOLD GMC ABOUT THIS BEFORE!!!! Interior chrome is dangerous and needs to go. At a bare minimum they need to offer replacement parts and install for all this interior chrome. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
When the vehicle is placed in park and I attempt to turn it off, the dash will indicate the vehicle is not in park and subsequently, the vehicle cannot be turned off. Sometimes, if you wiggle the shifter or move it through all the settings (RNDL) and back to park, it will resolve the issue. Sometimes, it can take a few minutes to resolve the issue. It's getting worse. If you can't shut off car someone can steal it, you also can't lock doors.
The contact owns a 2018 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop and shifting into park(P), the message "Shift to Park" was displayed. The contact stated that the transmission shifted to park(P) after several attempts to park the vehicle. The contact then turned off the vehicle. The local dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was 25,000.
The BECM (Battery Electric Charging Module) is failing, and making my Chevrolet Volt unsafe to drive. I can't get over 35 miles per hour on the highway, and it stops driving on electricity randomly. Going from 25 miles to saying 0 miles of EV charge while driving on the road. It also says "reduced propulsion", and has a hard time accelerating from a complete stop.
While driving my 2018 chevy volt I received a reduced propulsion error. I pulled over to assess and turn off the car and turn it back on only to find when I turned it back on I received an enginer failure error and the car would not drive forward or reverse. I had to have it towed to a Chevy dealership for evaluation. I understand from research and talking to service experts this is a common failure among the 2017 and 2018 Chevy volt and it is abhorrent that Chevy has not issued a recall on a common failure that compromises the safety of the driver and other drivers around them.
- Shift to park issue when the shifter is in park position and sometimes it will turn off. - Safety is at risk, this might still move or run even it is in park position. - Dealer will not take as manufacturer's defect. - They have not inspected the issues, but I will have to pay the diagnostic first and dealer will charge me with its repair. - The warning message appeared on the panel " Shift to Park."
Car doesn't shift into gear, just goes into neutral. Car says 'shift into park' and won't turn off when in park and the power button is pushed.
My 2018 Chevrolet Volt has a defective Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). Because of the defect my car lost all propulsion while I was driving. Neither battery motor nor gasoline engine would work and the car would not switch between the two. I was literally stuck in the roadway (fortunately not on a highway. The Check Engine light was on. I was able to barely get the vehicle to a GM dealer, where they diagnosed a defective BECM. The part is apparently on back order and some owners have waited months for the part to arrive. This is a serious safety issue by potentially causing a vehicle to lose power while operating in traffic.
On Nov 21, 2022, after approximately of 10 minutes (5 miles of driving), while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The vehicle was in full EV mode in the middle of a busy intersection. The vehicle had a full charge (50+ EV range remaining or 100% total EV remaining). The driver attempted to press down more on the accelerator to no avail. After approximately 5-10 seconds, in the busy intersection, without the ability to make the vehicle accelerate, the driver noticed the vehicle jerk (which occurred 2-3 times) at which point the ICE turned on and provided power to the vehicle, allowing the driver to drive out of the intersection. After several minutes of driving, the driver noticed "Reduced propulsion warning" was noticed/illuminated in addition to "Check Engine Light". After this point, the driver noted that the propulsion felt approximately 20% of "normal propulsion". The driver was also concerned about the ability to drive up very small hills due to reduction of propulsion/power. Upon arrival at the destination (2-3 miles from incident), the vehicle was safely parked, the vehicle's codes were checked with an OBD2 code reader and 19 codes were noted. Given the manifestation and safety issue of the vehicle, the vehicle was towed to Quality Chevrolet in Escondido where it remains as of 1/10/23. The codes collected on 11/21/22 include the following: 1. P0A46, 2. P0AC4, 3. P1E00, 4. P1B0B, 5. P1B43, 6. P1E1E, 7. P0AC4, 8. P1E00, 9. P
The vehicle frequently has an 'Action Required - Shift to Park' display on the dashboard even though the shift lever is in park. This means that the car cannot be powered off and you cannot leave the vehicle. It is a problem that GMC is aware of, but refuses to fix under warranty unless the vehicle actively shows the problem while at a GMC dealership.
There is a good chance my battery energy control module will fail on the highway creating a dangerous situation. Why has a recall not been issued?
Although the battery showed fully charged, the vehicle was not using battery power. At various points I would receive a "propulsion power reduced warning" and the car would lose power. I was driving on 2-lane windy country roads with no passing zones and lots of hills. At one particularly steep hill, I received the warning light and the car started lowing power again. By the time I reached the crest, the car had nearly come to a complete standstill. I have no doubt had I not reached it at that point, the car would have lost all power and begun rolling backward. The speed limit on this road is 55mph with several blind curves and hills, so the potential for a serious collision was great had it begun to roll back. When I reached my destination and turned off the car and restarted it again, it would only shift to neutral. It is now at the dealership where it was diagnosed as needing the BECM replaced.
To begin, I will set the scene of my experience. I was traveling east bound on 84 in northeast PA on my way to Long Island for work meetings that day. I was about one hour and a half away from my home at roughly 6am. I was traveling at apx. 70 mph when my car suddenly says "engine unavailable, reduced propulsion." and the fueld tank turned yellow in color on my dashboard. Then a sign said "service soon." My car then COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. My speed fell from 75 mph or so to 0 in a matter of a minute, I had no idea what was happening because there were no appropriate warnings such as, "Pull over immediately" or "SAFETY CONCERN PLEASE GET OFF THE HIGHWAY" -I would have taken anything to know that this was an actual emergency and I needed to at least get to a shoulder. I luckily was able to come to a stop mostly off the highway in a shoulder. I was located around a bend, in the pitch black, unable to stay in my car out of fear I would be smashed by a tractor trailer or car that did not see my car suddenly stopped. The car would not go in neutral or anything other than park and I left the hazards on (they eventually failed). I called my husband who drove to me while I stood on the side of the highway for an hour and a half in 30 degree weather. I called the police who were eventually able to put up flares and mark me as a hazard on the road. If there was a car traveling behind me, I would have been killed or seriously injured because I slowed so suddenly and had no way of kno
Reduc d propulsion power warning while driving in EV mode. ICE started and was able to make it 1/2 mile home. Failure diagnosed to a faulty BECM. Has been at the dealer for 1 month today with no word on when the part or repair will be done.
When placing in park it doesn't trigger the switch and car will not shut down.
Shift to park not working. Dashboard says action needed and vehicle will not shut off.
The gear shifter for the Chevy Volt has an issue where it does not register in Park. I need to contantlty move through the gears to have it be in park.
......car totally stopped on road in traffic and would not restart. I felt the car losign propulsion so I got off the Intestate and on to a local street. Message in dash was that engine was unavailable. I got out of the car and several cars almost hit my car. Car was flat bedded to Chevy dealer and diagonosed. EGR valve needs to be replaced and is covered under warrenty. HOWEVER, have been waiting 4days and t old that valve not available. This is on a vacation trip and 300 miles away from home.. I can ask for the EGR valve from the car. I am on the GM-Volt listserve and other Generation 2 Volt owners have identified this problem previously. You should initiate a recall since the engine just cuts off and the battery propulsion is unavailable.
I put it in park, and try to turn off the car, but it says "Shift to Park", and won't let me turn off the car.
BECM failed upon startup. Pressed start and vehicle appeared to turn on. Shifted into reverse but there was no motor power and I began to roll backwards down the driveway. Started the vehicle again and then the engine came on and a reduced propulsion message appeared.
Car shifter saying not in park when it is causing issues with turning off car. Has been happening for a while
Over the past several weeks, I have had the car issue an error stating "Shift to Park". I have previously had the car in for service for this error, and in the past have succeeded in getting it to stop by squeezing the trigger on the shifter repeatedly, but the error has returned and is getting more persistent. It now happens every few times I park the car. I cannot turn off the car without getting the error message to clear, and sometimes it has taken considerable time and effort to get the message to clear. I have not taken the car back to the dealer again as I read that it was important to first submit a report here.
Car wouldn’t turn off kept saying SHIFT TO PARK. When car was already in park On Chevy Volt forms this problem is common, sometimes it comes on when driving and freezing the steering wheel. Chevy knows how wide spread this problem is as attested by the many class action law suits, but the refuse to fix it or issue a recall for cars outside of warranty
The shift to park error populates every time I park incorrectly informing me to shift to park before turning off vehicle and thus preventing me from turning off the vehicle. I have to restart the car, put in drive and put back in park forcefully and it may recognize the shift from drive to park.
"Shift to park message" from failing shifter frequently displays, preventing the car from turning off.
Going 80 mph on the freeway with adaptive crusie control on, the car begins to jerk, and the rpm's shoot up and down. The adaptive cruise control disengages, the stabiltrack, abs, and engine light turned on and the car goes into limp mode. As I slow down, the speedometer keeps increasing up to 90. After, I inspected the driver wheel speed sensor and discovered that the sensor tip in the hub had been damaged. The anti-click washer had broken and began cutting the sensor until it failed.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
